General Statement of Duties:
To be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of assigned trucks, backhoes, tractors, tools, and other automotive and power-driven equipment; to perform manual labor, miscellaneous maintenance, repair, and construction work; and to perform related work as required.
Supervision Received: Work is performed under the general supervision of the County Drain Commissioner and Drain Superintendent.
Supervision Exercised: None.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: These examples do not include all of the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.
· Operate a truck for hauling crushed stone, sand, brick, tools, or other materials and equipment.
· Operate chainsaw, pumps, air compressors, tractor with backhoe, loader, or other equipment.
· Operate pneumatic tools and other hand-operated power equipment.
· Operate a tractor for cutting and spraying weeds and brush.
· Prepare work materials, inspect, and review job site with landowner.
· Assist in servicing and making minor repairs and adjustments to heavy duty trucks and equipment.
· Perform manual labor, load and unload trucks, dig manholes, and ditches.
· May clean and flush sewers and catch basins.
· Assist in the construction and repair of sewer lines, catch basins, and manholes.
· Prepare vehicle reports.
· Perform related work as required.
Desirable Education, Experience and/or Qualifications: An employee in this class, upon appointment should have the equivalent of the following training, qualifications and/or experience.
· Graduation from an accredited high school or GED
· One (1) year of experience in the operation of various types of automotive equipment and tools used in public works activities.
· CDL Classification “A” or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
· Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license.
· Must be a county resident.
· Familiarity with roads and principal locations in the county.
· Reasonable knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of various automotive and power-driven equipment used in public works activities.
· Reasonable knowledge of traffic laws and driving practices.
· Some knowledge of automotive and power-driven equipment lubrication and repair activities.
· Ability to operate equipment skillfully, safely and in accordance with rules and regulations.
· Mechanical aptitude.
· Ability to work effectively with other officials, employees and the general public.
· Must respond to emergency call assistance, when necessary.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities:
· Must be able to work in all types of outdoor weather conditions.
· Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
· Must be able to ascend and descend a ladder up to 40 feet.
· Must be able to enter trenches and confined spaces.
· Must be able to work with loud tools and equipment and may be exposed to moderate to excessive noise levels.
- Must be able to walk on a variety of terrains, including uneven, muddy, steep areas, or snow-packed terrain
· Must be able to operate heavy machinery or equipment.
· May be exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, and smoke.
· Work environment involves some exposure to pesticides and various contaminants.
· Must be able to see and notice the needs of others.
