What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Education and Information Officer position at Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District?
NATURE OF WORK
This position is located in the Life Safety Division of the Lehigh Acres Fire Department. The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, and the direct supervision of the Fire Marshal. The incumbent has reasonable latitude to exercise independent judgment and personal initiative in performing assigned duties. Work is evaluated by the attainment of objectives, effectiveness of written and oral reports, and through periodic conferences.
The incumbent conducts initial and/or annual conferences with school officials and delegates from civic clubs and organizations to evaluate the needs of the community as related to fire prevention education and general safety education. The following list is intended to be descriptive rather than restrictive. The individual in this position may be required to perform duties in addition to those revised as designated by the chief or his designee.
- Creates and presents fire safety programs to various groups and organizations occasionally utilizing and supervising additional department personnel on temporary assignment to those programs.
- Develop fire safety and awareness programs for all levels of citizens with emphasis on elementary and senior age groups.
- Prepares detailed reports of all educational programs conducted, identifying subject, type of facility, number of persons, date, time, and materials used in presentation.
- Responds to request from citizens, community groups, and businesses for advice relating to fire safety programs.
- Researches background data into fire cause to assist in determining areas of need for local fire prevention and education programs.
- Assists in the preparation of promotional/education budget. Outlines program needs and expected costs for the upcoming budget year.
- Responds when called and reports to incident commander for assignment in emergency operations.
- Prepares statistics and other related information and conveys same to the news media via phone, fax, news releases and/or on or off camera interviews. Release of any information is to be authorized by the Chief, his designee or the Duty Officer.
- Performs other related duties as required by the Chief or his designee.
REQUIREMENTS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- The incumbent must have the ability to: determine work priorities; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationship with others. Collect, review and verify data relating to educational needs of the community.
- The incumbent must have good knowledge of public relations concepts, fire protection systems and fire alarm systems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The incumbent must meet the following minimum requirements: Five (5) years of public fire safety education experience; have a high school diploma or a State recognized equivalent; have a valid motor vehicle license; be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination. The incumbent must successfully pass all background screenings.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to speak Spanish or Creole is a plus for this position.

Pay: $30.24 - $32.42 per hour
