OVERVIEW:  

Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 129 independent legal aid offices nationwide. LSC’s mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans.

The Office of Compliance and Enforcement (OCE) oversees compliance with the LSC Act, applicable laws and regulations, and grant requirements. OCE reviews compliance matters, maintains related records and processes, and works with grantees and other LSC offices to support accountability and the responsible administration of LSC funds.. 

The internships are based in Washington, DC, and will require working from an office in DC in accordance with LSC’s hybrid work model. The successful candidates must live in the DC metropolitan area for the duration of the internship.

 

BASIC FUNCTION?

The primary objectives of this internship are for the intern to:

  • Develop a practical understanding of compliance oversight within LSC-funded civil legal services;
  • Strengthen legal and policy research, document review, and professional writing skills;
  • Build experience organizing, reviewing, and analyzing compliance-related data and records;
  • Strengthen project management, time management, professional judgment, and effective workplace behaviors;
  • Gain hands-on experience using OCE’s compliance tools, systems, and processes.

The internship is expected to run from September through December 2026. Interns will work part-time, up to 20 hours per week during the fall.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The intern's principal duties and responsibilities include:

  • Supporting OCE compliance projects and related administrative processes from initial assignment through completion, with guidance from OCE staff.
  • Reviewing, organizing, checking, and updating compliance-related data and records using Smartsheet, Microsoft Excel, Box, and other OCE systems.
  • Assisting with internal compliance referrals, including A-50 referrals, by gathering relevant records, preparing organized supporting document sets, and supporting draft memoranda or correspondence.
  • Conducting legal, regulatory, policy, and factual research related to LSC grant requirements, real property, and other compliance topics.
  • Supporting OCE’s real property work by organizing records, updating tracking tools, and helping maintain reference materials and related documentation.
  • Reviewing documents and data for accuracy, completeness, and consistency, and helping identify missing information or appropriate follow-up.
  • Assisting with information requests and special projects by collecting, organizing, and summarizing relevant information for OCE and other LSC offices.
  • Participating in project and stakeholder meetings, taking notes, tracking action items, and coordinating with OCE staff and other LSC teams as needed.
  • Assisting with other OCE projects and duties as assigned.


WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

The ideal applicant must be:

  • Organized and attentive to detail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word
  • Strong in research, analysis, written communication, and verbal communication
  • Comfortable reviewing detailed documents and data while managing multiple assignments
  •  Able to work independently and collaboratively, exercise sound judgment, and handle sensitive information responsibly
  • Committed to LSC’s mission of promoting equal access to justice
  • Interest or background in compliance, law, public policy, grants administration, or nonprofit operations preferred
  • Bonus: Experience with Smartsheet, Adobe Acrobat, survey tools, data organization, or process mapping!
