Job Summary:
The Senior HR Business Partner serves as a strategic and hands-on HR leader supporting multiple offices across the organization. This role is responsible not only for shaping people strategy, culture, and workforce planning, but also for driving and executing the day-to-day HR operations that ensure accuracy, compliance, and organizational stability.
This role will initially operate as the organization’s primary HR leader and will be responsible for stabilizing HR operations, strengthening compliance practices, and implementing scalable HR processes across multiple offices. As the function matures, this role will play a role in helping define the structure of the HR team.
Acting as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and Managing Attorneys, this individual partners closely with leaders to address workforce challenges, strengthen performance management practices, and cultivate a cohesive, mission-aligned culture.
This position requires deep subject matter expertise across employment law, compliance, employee relations, payroll and leave administration, and HR systems. The ideal candidate brings strong analytical thinking, sound judgment, and exceptional organizational discipline to manage complex, multi-office operations while simultaneously advancing long-term HR infrastructure and capability.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Partner with Executive Leadership and Managing Attorneys to align HR strategy with organizational goals, funding realities, and long-term sustainability
- Lead workforce planning, succession strategy, and thoughtful organizational design across multiple offices
- Establish and continuously refine HR policies, systems, and governance frameworks to strengthen compliance, credibility, and operational consistency
- Serve as a visible HR presence across offices, building trust and reinforcing HR as a strategic, mission-aligned partner
Employee Relations & Performance
- Serve as the primary advisor on complex employee relations matters, workplace investigations, accommodations, and risk mitigation
- Equip and coach managers to confidently navigate performance conversations, disciplinary processes, and development planning
- Lead the evolution of performance management systems to ensure clarity, fairness, accountability, and alignment with compensation philosophy
- Develop structured processes for performance improvement, documentation, and follow-through
- Navigate sensitive employee relations matters with a high level of emotional intelligence, particularly within a mission-driven nonprofit environment
HR Operations Oversight
- Ensure compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and nonprofit funding requirements
- Establish rigorous documentation standards and audit-ready personnel file management practices
- Identify and correct operational inefficiencies, implementing scalable, process-driven improvements
- Oversee HR systems and data management, including HRIS administration and reporting (Paylocity experience strongly preferred)
Compensation & Benefits
- Advise leadership on compensation philosophy, market benchmarking, and equitable pay practices.
- Oversee benefits administration, vendor partnerships, and employee education to ensure clarity and trust
- Support transparent linkage between performance, compensation adjustments, and career progression
Organizational Development & Engagement
- Design and support training initiatives for managers and staff, with emphasis on leadership capability and compliance confidence
- Strengthen onboarding, professional development pathways, and internal mobility frameworks
- Drive employee engagement and retention strategies that reinforce LAS’s mission-driven culture
- Promote equity, accountability, and transparency across all HR practices
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration or equivalent combination of education, experience and training
- 7 years of progressive HR experience
- Prior Senior HR Generalist, HR Manager or HR Business Partner experience
- Demonstrated ability to quickly assess organizational needs and implement effective HR solutions
- Experience with HRIS systems (Paylocity strongly preferred)
- Strong knowledge of Tennessee and federal employment laws and compliance requirements
- Experience advising senior leaders and influencing organizational decision-making
- SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR certification preferred
- Experience in nonprofit or mission-driven organizations strongly preferred

Working Conditions:
- Work during office hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Work after hours or on weekends may be occasionally required.
- Potential flexibility after 90 days to transition into a hybrid setting pending leadership approval
- Work is performed primarily in an office setting and at outreach sites.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Often communicating with people using the phone, email, via video call, or in person.
- Occasionally lift up to 15 pounds.
