Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) is seeking a full-time Supervising Attorney for its Salem Regional Office. The person in this position will supervise staff attorneys and assist the Regional Director in other management duties as needed. This position is eligible for a partial remote work option.
Background
LASO is a non-profit organization that represents low-income clients in civil cases. LASO’s eight regional offices serve the general low-income population throughout the state and two specialized statewide programs focused on services to farmworkers and on issues impacting Native Americans. LASO is an effective, high-quality legal services program that is committed to advocacy strategies having the broadest possible impact on client community problems.
The Salem office serves the civil legal needs of low-income residents in Marion and Polk counties.
Responsibilities
The supervising attorney will assist the Regional Director with the supervision of attorneys and other management duties as needed. The supervising attorney’s primary responsibility will be managing attorneys’ legal work, including monitoring attorneys’ workloads, providing feedback and guidance on cases, mentoring newer attorneys in their emerging practice of law, managing grant and contract compliance, handling personnel management issues within the office, fostering positive relationships and communicating all requirements to staff effectively.
In addition to management responsibilities, the supervising attorney will maintain their own varied poverty law caseload that will focus on housing, family law, and administrative law matters and other substantive areas as assigned by the Regional Director. The supervising attorney will handle all aspects of legal representation including client contact, pleading preparation, research, file maintenance, working with support staff, hearing and trial work, and co-counseling cases with newer attorneys.
Qualifications
Seven or more years of legal experience required. Current member of the Oregon State Bar, and prior litigation experience is required. Competitive candidates will demonstrate an interest in and commitment to advocacy for the legal rights of low-income and other vulnerable populations. The ideal candidate will have a broad range of poverty law experience and experience bringing impact litigation and advocacy to address systemic issues affecting our clients. Experience in and/or aptitude for supervising others is required. This position calls for enthusiasm, creativity, good judgment, initiative, and willingness to work collaboratively, as well as a demonstrated understanding and commitment to anti-bias principles, cultural competency and addressing systemic racism and other forms of oppression. LASO has a hiring preference for candidates who are bilingual in Spanish and/or another language spoken by our client population, however, this position does not have a bilingual requirement.
Salary/Benefits
Compensation is based on a 35-hour work week. Salary range is $85,700 – 90,200 for 7-10 years’ experience; and $91,700 - $114,200 for 11-30 years’ experience annually; salaries are determined by relevant work experience and our Personnel Policies for Management Employees. Additional $4,300 to $5,700 annually for bilingual ability, depending on proficiency. Full benefits package including individual and family health, vision, and dental insurance coverage; 6% employer retirement contribution; generous paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave; and paid moving expenses.
