Job Summary:

The ElderAccessLine Attorney will play a crucial role in providing legal guidance, supervision, and strategic direction within a team of attorneys and paralegals.


Essential Functions

  • Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • Evaluates Centralized Intake Unit (CIU) applications to determine acceptance and level of service or representation; identifies and gathers other information to assist in determining case acceptance; formulates legal advice and recommendations based on the investigation, interviews, and legal research; educates clients regarding their legal options and the consequences of each, as well as the processes and procedures involved in representing the client's interests. 
  • Maintains knowledge of the current developments in the various substantive areas of law as they affect clients and the client community, including issues facing elders.
  • Correctly applies and complies with policies, procedures and mission statement and assists in implementing firm goals.
  • Complies with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations and record keeping in all the cases the individual attorney handles and activities in which the ElderAccessLine® Attorney is involved.
  • Ensures supervisees comply with LSC regulations and record keeping in all cases handled and activities in which they are involved. · Assists Managing Attorney to train, supervise, and advise CIU intake paralegals.
  • Responds to questions regarding intake and compliance from all firm staff.
  • Assists with managing day to day work flow of CIU tasks.
  • Make calls on the AccessLine or ElderAccessLine® as needed
  • Conducts outreach to the elder community.
  • Maintains positive relationships with other agencies serving elders of the low-income population.
  • Maintains positive relationships with other legal programs serving elders.
  • Assists with maintaining question and advice scripts and other documentation necessary for CIU work.
  • Other administrative tasks as necessary.

Requirements

  

Key Performance Indicators 

1. Staff Development:

  • Meets standards for listening to calls and ongoing para evaluation. 
  • Number of staff members participating in training and development programs.

2. Case Management:

  • Timeliness and effectiveness in advising and reviewing cases,.
  • Proper maintenance of workload [AM1] balance among team members.

3. Compliance and Quality:

  • Adherence to ethical and professional standards within the CIU.
  • Quality assurance measures implemented and improvements in legal services quality.
  • Ensures the accuracy of ensuring compliance with LSC regulations within the cases handled.

4. Community Engagement:

  • Number of strategic partnerships established and maintained with community organizations and stakeholders.
  • Participation in community advocacy initiatives and educational events.


Supervisory Responsibility

May supervise attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, interns, externs, and volunteers.


Work Environment

This position allows for a mostly remote workplace with occasional travel to a Legal Aid office. To work remotely, the candidate must have a quiet workspace where they can work undisturbed and maintain confidentiality. The candidate must live within 60 miles of a Legal Aid of Nebraska office. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and multifunction printers.


Travel

Travel to the Omaha office is required on a regular basis. Travel within Nebraska is required. Travel to other states may also be necessary. 


Education and Experience

1. Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.  

2. Admitted to, and in good standing with, the Nebraska State Bar (or admission imminent.) 

3. Relevant experience in poverty law, elder law, with a legal aid program, or serving the client community in a way related to legal services.  Commitment to provide legal services to low-income and elder citizens of Nebraska. 

4. Experience supervising staff.  

5. Awareness of the legal problems and needs of low-income and elder Nebraskans. 

6. Ability to communicate with persons in the client community. 

7. Ability to work effectively with other members of the firm. 

8. Willingness to participate in the local bar and community.
