Supervise and evaluate the performance of personnel as assigned.

Education 

Master’s degree from accredited college or university 

Valid Mid-Management certification 

Certified in the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) 

Pass Bilingual or ESL exam through the Texas Education Agency. After two unsuccessful  testing attempts, employee must attend 6 hours of ELL professional learning provided by the  MISD’s ELL Department. Must be completed by the end of the first contract year.

Experience 

Three years of experience as a successful classroom teacher  

Three years of experience in instructional leadership roles 

 

POSITION FUNCTION/PURPOSE 

To provide leadership in the operation of the school by assisting the principal in providing instructional leadership for  the school staff. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Instructional Management 

1. Evaluate instruction within classrooms, assess the effectiveness of the instructional program, and initiate  improvements as appropriate. 

2. Assist in evaluating instructional materials and recommend the most appropriate items available for the  purpose of facilitating effective instruction. 

3. Promote the active involvement of teachers in curriculum development and implementation. 4. Assist in providing curriculum coordination and balance. 

5. Assist in interpreting grading policies for students. 

6. Coordinate special programs and evaluate their effectiveness. 

7. Assist principal in tracking and maintaining accurate PEIMS data, including leaver coding. 8. Coordinate 9th grade transition 

9. Coordinate services at the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) 

 Advanced Academic Programs 

1. Coordinate Advanced Academic programs and services, including dual credit, Advanced Placement (AP),  Gifted and Talented (GT) 

2. Promote dual credit and AP to high school students and parents during advising/scheduling sessions.

3. Work with Midland College counselors and registrar to maintain good communication. 

4. Advise students regarding dual credit and AP eligibility and testing status. 

5. Provide for distribution of dual credit information/registration packets. 

6. Be responsible for providing Midland College Admissions office with student test scores/transcripts. 7. Assist faculty and students concerning registration deadlines for advanced academic programs.   

 School/Organization Climate 

1. Assist in maintaining a school atmosphere which promotes effective learning 

2. Assist teachers, where necessary, in becoming sensitive to the needs, interests, and 

feelings of students. 

  

 School/Organization Improvement 

1. Assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.  

2. Participate in planning and revising the school handbook and other school publications. 

3. Assist in the development of the master schedule for the school. 

4. Assist in the maintenance of required forms and student records. 

5. Participate with the principal in developing and implementing school policies. 

Personnel Management 

1. Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences with staff; serve  as appraiser in the T-TESS.  

2. Assist principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new instructional staff. 

3. Assist in selecting, assigning, training, supervising, and evaluating the performance of support professional  staff, including counselors and assistant principals. 

4. Assist in orienting new teachers, including but not limited to mentoring and T-TESS. 

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management 

1. Assist with inventories and with the ordering and distribution supplies. 

2. Assist in the administration and organization of business affairs, especially the development of school  budgets. 

3. Assist in coordinating the use, maintenance, security, and repair of the school building, equipment, and  grounds.  

4. Assist in the organization and coordination of transportation which services the school. 

5. Assist in the administration and supervision of the cafeteria. 

6. Assist in grouping and assigning pupils to classes. 

7. Share responsibility for the direction of school calendar, activities program, and assemblies. 8. Assist with campus testing. 

Student Management 

1. Assist in student disciplinary matters. 

2. Assist principal and faculty to ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is  appropriate and equitable. 

  

School/Community Relations 

1. Promote the understanding and implementation of the Midland Independent School District’s philosophy,  goals, and objectives. 

2. Assist in the articulation and coordination of the educational program. 

3. Assist in planning, evaluating, and leading faculty, departmental, grade-group, and/or parent meetings. 4. Initiate and maintain appropriate communication with parents. 

5. Assist in coordinating activities of the various school advisory committees and the PTA. 

Professional Growth and Development 

1. Formulate, with the principal, an annual Assistant Principal Professional Development Plan.

2. Observe professional and ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the  Texas Education Agency code of ethics.  

3. Use information and insights provided through assessment instruments, the district appraisal process,  evaluative feedback from line supervisors, and professional development programs to improve  performance. 

4. Provide leadership in addressing challenges facing the profession; pursue professional development activities;  disseminate ideas and information to other professionals. 

5. Perform such other duties as may be assigned or as may be necessary for job effectiveness. 

Summer School 

1. Supervise the feeder pattern’s high school summer school and TAKS preparation/remediation program. 2. Serve as the high school summer testing coordinator for TAKS and EOC. 

3. Coordinate and supervise summer program activities for the high school feeder pattern, including hiring,  monitoring, and evaluating teachers. 

4. Supervise the summer EOC preparation/remediation program

 

Special Knowledge/Skills 

1. Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction 

2. Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness 

3. Strong communications, public relations, and interpersonal skills 

4. Ability to work well with a diverse population 

5. Knowledge of student coding and PEIMS data and database systems

 Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environment Factors: 

 Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and  pushing. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
