The Head Boys' Hockey Coach is responsible for leading all aspects of the Legacy High School boys' hockey program. The coach will develop student-athletes academically, athletically, and personally while fostering a culture built on integrity, sportsmanship, accountability, and excellence. The head coach serves as the leader of the program and represents Legacy High School, Bismarck Public Schools, and the North Dakota High School Activities Association in a professional manner at all times.

Essential Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Provide vision, leadership, and direction for the entire boys' hockey program.
  • Develop and maintain a positive, competitive, and student-centered culture.
  • Promote the values and mission of Legacy High School through athletics.
  • Establish clear expectations for athletes, assistant coaches, and parents.

Student-Athlete Development

  • Teach hockey fundamentals, systems, and advanced game strategies.
  • Promote academic achievement and monitor student-athlete eligibility.
  • Encourage leadership, teamwork, accountability, and character development.
  • Foster an environment where all athletes are treated with dignity and respect.

Practice and Competition

  • Plan, organize, and conduct effective daily practices.
  • Prepare athletes physically, mentally, and strategically for competition.
  • Evaluate player performance and communicate roles clearly.
  • Manage all aspects of game preparation and bench leadership.

Staff Leadership

  • Recruit, supervise, mentor, and evaluate assistant coaches.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and communicate program expectations.
  • Delegate responsibilities appropriately while maintaining accountability.
  • Encourage professional growth among coaching staff.

Program Administration

  • Coordinate team schedules in cooperation with the Activities Director.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of equipment and uniforms.
  • Ensure proper care and security of school facilities and equipment.
  • Manage the program budget responsibly.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities consistent with district policies.

Communication

  • Maintain positive communication with athletes, parents, school administration, officials, media, and community members.
  • Conduct preseason parent meetings.
  • Address concerns professionally and in a timely manner.
  • Promote the program through positive public relations and community engagement.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure a safe environment during all practices, games, and team activities.
  • Follow all Bismarck Public Schools, NDHSAA, and USA Hockey policies and procedures.
  • Maintain required coaching certifications, first aid, CPR, SafeSport, and concussion education.
  • Report injuries and incidents according to district procedures.

Program Development

  • Build strong relationships with youth hockey organizations to support long-term program success.
  • Assist in the development of future student-athletes through clinics and community involvement.
  • Encourage multi-sport participation while supporting student-athlete development.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve the program.

  • Collaborate effectively with school personnel and fellow coaches.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all matters.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Previous successful coaching experience in hockey.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of hockey skills, systems, and player development.
  • Ability to lead and manage a comprehensive high school athletic program.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Successful completion of district background check requirements.
  • Current or ability to obtain all required NDHSAA and BPS coaches requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coaching experience at the high school, junior, collegiate, or higher level.
  • Experience supervising assistant coaches and managing a complete athletic program.
  • Experience developing players at multiple competitive levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with youth hockey organizations and the community.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and coach for extended periods.
  • Ability to demonstrate hockey techniques and participate in practices as needed.
  • Ability to travel with the team for competitions.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated annually by the Activities Director based upon:

  • Leadership and management of the program.
  • Student-athlete development and well-being.
  • Compliance with district and NDHSAA policies.
  • Communication and professionalism.
  • Organization and administration of the program.
  • Positive representation of Legacy High School and Bismarck Public Schools.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and competitive excellence.

Please note - Coaches who hold a ND teaching license - wages are reportable to the North Dakota Teacher's Fund for Retirement (TFFR).  The employee (coach) will contribute 11.75% of their salary and the District will contribute 12.75%.

Salary : $6,639 - $8,963
