Position Summary:
The Legal Assistant will assist the Closing Department with managing the final stage of personal injury cases, ensuring accurate disbursement of settlement funds, resolution of liens, and proper case closure. This role requires strong attention to detail, financial accuracy, and the ability to coordinate with attorneys, clients, medical providers, and third parties.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review settlement agreements and prepare closing statements for attorney and client approval
- Calculate and verify disbursement of settlement proceeds, including attorney fees, costs, and client net recovery
- Identify, negotiate, and resolve medical liens, subrogation claims, and outstanding balances (e.g., providers, insurance carriers, Medicare/Medicaid)
- Communicate with clients regarding settlement breakdowns and answer questions related to disbursements
- Coordinate receipt and clearance of settlement funds and ensure compliance with trust accounting rules
- Prepare and issue settlement checks in accordance with firm policies and legal requirements
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure proper documentation in the case management system
- Ensure all required documents (releases, lien confirmations, closing statements) are fully executed and filed
- Work closely with attorneys, paralegals, and accounting staff to finalize case closures efficiently
- Monitor and track timelines to ensure timely resolution of all closing-related tasks
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree is required; preferably in Legal Studies, Business Administration, or related field
- Experience working at a law firm is preferred
- Strong desire to work and learn within legal field
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel)
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication and client service skills; bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred
- Ability to manage multiple cases and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Salary : $55,000 - $65,000
