GENERAL SUMMARY
The custodian is responsible for maintaining a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient learning environment. Reports to the Head Custodian.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean at all times.
• Shovels, plows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate.
• Ensures exit doors are open and panic bolts are working properly during school hours.
• Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
• Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when necessary.
• Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
• Washes windows on both the inside and outside at least twice a year, and more frequently if needed.
• Maintains grounds free from rubbish.
• Performs yard keeping chores such as grass cutting and tree trimming as necessary.
• Keeps floors in a clean and attractive condition and in good preservation.
• Cleans chalkboards or wipe off boards as needed.
• Reports major repairs needed promptly to the head custodian.
• Notifies principal and head custodian immediately of any emergency or danger to school property.
• Remains on school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours with authorized use and approved extended work hours.
• Assumes responsibility for opening and closing the building each school day, and securing doors and windows before leaving.
• Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for activities and directed by the principal.
• Complies with local laws and procedures for trash, rubbish, and waste storage and disposal.
• Reports to work on time.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the head custodian or principal.
• Works cooperatively with others in a respectful manner.
REQUIREMENTS
• High school graduate or G.E.D.
• Valid driver's license
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
• Knowledge of school district practices, policies, and procedures.
• Extensive knowledge of maintenance practices, procedures, materials, and supplies.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of cleaning.
• Ability to complete work requiring constant attention.
• Ability to understand and follow detailed directions.
• Skill in operating equipment and utilizing standard tools.
• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, staff, and other groups and individuals.
