What are the responsibilities and job description for the Communications Specialist position at Lee County Government?
General Definition of Work:
The Communications Specialist is responsible for executing and supporting Lee County’s comprehensive communication strategy. This role encompasses the management of social media, website content, and digital communications, as well as handling routine public records requests, content creation, and intermediate graphic design. The Communications Specialist plays a vital role in reputation management, analyzing communication performance metrics, and maintaining
consistency in public messaging across all platforms.
This role requires a blend of creative and technical skills in digital communication, with a focus on content creation, social media management, and analytics. Collaboration with various departments is key to ensuring unified, strategic messaging. Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Specialist will support public engagement efforts, manage online reputation, and assist in emergency communication and outreach initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the concepts, techniques, and resources applied in public sector communications. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County staff, other agency officials, and the public. Must have social media experience and basic to intermediate proficiency in graphic design. Comprehensive knowledge of digital communication and social media strategies, emphasizing effective public engagement. Strong understanding of reputation management, including strategies for monitoring public sentiment and responding to media coverage. Organizational and project management skills to handle multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines efficiently.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or related field and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in communications, public relations, or digital media, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in the public sector or local government is preferred.
Special Requirements:
Valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina.
