CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: FIREFIGHTER

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform professional fire and rescue operations to save lives and minimize
property damage. Responds to man made and natural fire, rescue and emergency calls. Maintains vehicles, trucks,
firefighting and rescue equipment, and the fire station.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not
exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
Other duties may be required and assigned.

Performs search and rescue duties to save humans and animals; makes critical decisions as first responder on
emergency scene.

Participates in firefighting and suppression activities at various locations including grass, trash, forest, vehicle, and
structure; drives and operates firefighting trucks and apparatus; coordinates activities at fire scenes; gains entry to
structures; controls ventilation; performs salvage work.

Responds to other emergency calls; works hazardous material scenes, recognizing and identifying materials; works
accident scenes; provides medical assistance; assists EMS with patient care; performs and assists with extrications;
cleans roadways of debris by sweeping and hosing down area.

Inspects and monitors operations of firefighting and rescue equipment; checks trucks and other vehicles for
maintenance, repair and operational needs; monitors equipment on trucks; ensures radios are working properly; cleans
and maintains trucks and equipment.

Performs cleaning and maintenance tasks around the station; cleans floors, windows, bays, bathrooms, kitchen and
other areas of the station; cuts grass and maintains landscape around station.

Participates in public relations and community service tasks; conducts station tours; conducts fire prevention programs
for groups; performs fire code inspections.

Assists with and performs non-emergency activities; prepares pre-fire plans; conducts and participates in fire
suppression, first aid/CPR, hazardous materials, and first responder training; checks, paints, maintains hydrants; learns
and maintains street knowledge.

Performs routine administrative tasks in support of the daily operations of the station; reads and reviews maps, safety
alerts, water flow charts, architectural drawings and related documents; prepares and processes reports, lists, and charts.

Operates and utilizes a variety of search, rescue and firefighting/suppression equipment including a fire truck, fire
apparatus, hydraulic rescue tools, electric generators, power tools, and other equipment; operates a personal computer,
phone system, fax machine, copier and other equipment as necessary to complete essential administrative functions;
utilizes lawn maintenance equipment to maintain landscape around station.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; less than one year of experience in firefighting and rescue operations; or any equivalent
combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this
job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license, as well as a Georgia Firefighter, CPR/First Aid,
Georgia Crash Victim Extrication, Georgia Rescue Specialist and other certifications as required.

exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for
the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding
the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control
the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and
information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May
include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions
furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify
methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving
the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly
measurable or verifiable.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on
climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and
crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50
pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds,
taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental
conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes,
hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic
hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, explosives, firearms, water
hazards, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
