Job Title:                High School Speech & Debate

Department:          Instruction

Reports to:            Building Principal

Classification:       Certified / Exempt

 

Summary

To develop and grow the Speech and Debate program at Lebanon High School through instruction in the subject matter and skills necessary to the development of students.  Establish good relationships with parents, students and other staff members.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the students.
  3. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity of interests of the students.
  4. Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day such as tournaments and other Speech & Debate related activities.
  5. Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  6. Manages the inventory, budget and purchasing related to the Speech & Debate program to best allow for student success.
  7. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  8. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and to aid students in preparation for tournaments and competitions including district, state and national level competition.  
  9. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  10. Strives to implement by instruction and action the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  11. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  12. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  13. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  14. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  15. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s)
  16. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  17. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  18. Other duties as may be assigned by the administrator.

Supervisory Duties 

Supervises students at all times.

 

Qualifications 

Education/Experience/Certificates

Bachelors Degree and valid Missouri teaching certificate required; or such alternative to these qualifications that the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Skills and Abilities  

Language 

Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, board policy, administrative procedures/forms, and government regulations and guidelines. Must be able to complete forms, write reports, and engage in written correspondence with parents. Must have the ability to write clearly and complete lesson plans.

Computation

The individual must have the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

Reasoning 

Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must be able to apply knowledge of current educational theory and instructional techniques while presenting subject matter to students.

Technology

The individual must understand basic computer functions such as word processing and internet use. Will be using district software for recording grades and finding student information.

The individual who holds this position must have the ability to speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously; must be able to move around the classroom; must be able to read handwritten and printed materials.

Consistent and regular attendance is an essential job function of this position.

 

Conditions and Environment

The work conditions and environment described here are representative of those that an individual will encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform tasks, such as loading and unloading buses.

 

Terms of Employment

10 months (183 days).  Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board

Policy on Evaluation of Certified Staff.
