JOB DESCRIPTION

FULL-TIME WATER OPERATOR POSITION

Summary/Objective

Works under the guidance of a licensed water operator and District Manager. Will be required to gain Water II operator’s license within 1 year of employment.

Essential Functions:

  • Keep a record of new meter installations and exchanges.
  • Monitor meters on computer program daily for non-read meters, customer leaks and record findings.
  • Install, replace, repair, inspect, and maintain all water meters.
  • Assist in the installation, repair and maintenance of the district’s water system, including water mains, water service lines, water meters, and hydrants.
  • Compute water consumption.
  • Report defects and irregularities to supervisor.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries and complaints from customers regarding water service.
  • Respond to emergency calls after normal working hours, on an as needed basis, for both water department and community wide emergencies.
  • Work odd hours and on holidays as the job duties require.
  • Collect water samples for tests to be in compliance with KDHE regulations.
  • Maintain pumps, valves, and related equipment in water pumping stations.
  • Monitor water system(s) operation by using gauges, meters, control panels.
  • Switch out chlorine bottles as needed and monitor, and order as needed

Work Environment

This position is 85% outdoor work, in all types of weather and some exposure to dangerous chemicals. Office work is also necessary to maintain proper documentation.

Physical Demands

The physical demand described here is representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Requires the ability to exert a considerable amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects and to stoop, crouch, climb and lift in the performance of manual labor; to operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicle; to work around electrical equipment in a safe manner. Tasks require color and visual perception. Work on pipe repairs beneath your feet, perform tasks on equipment 1” to 30” below ground level while lying on the ground.

Travel

Primarily, use work truck. Operator will be paid per mile if they use their own vehicle.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or Equivalent is required, supplemented by specialized training in a water treatment plant operations desired.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age. Drug screening required.

Must reside no more than 30 minutes response time to Water Treatment Plant.

Salary: $25-28 per/hr. (based on experience) Pay Frequency is Monthly

Benefits:

KPERS, An insurance stipend. Employees will need to get own health insurance.

In the first year you will receive 2 weeks of PTO and 2 sick days a year.

6 Paid Holidays and 5 Floating Holidays to use at your discretion.

From 2 years to 10 years of employment you will receive 3 weeks of PTO.

Hours: Operator hours will vary and will need to be available when called upon. Operators’ regular hours are generally 7:30 to 3:30. The operator will be guaranteed 40 hours a week. Operator could average 0-20 hrs or more in overtime in one week
