Program Description: Salem Public Schools and LEAP for Education, a local non-profit, partner to operate a middle school afterschool and summer program that takes place at Collins Middle School in Salem, MA. The program promotes positive youth development, social emotional learning, and academic skill development. Project-based enrichment opportunities are offered each 9-12 week session in a variety of subject areas to provide opportunities for students to explore new interests in engaging ways, connect school day learning to new applications, and develop social-emotional and team work skills. Students also engage in team-building, game time, arts and crafts, etc.

Job Description: Group Leaders are essential in supporting students and assisting Lead Facilitators and the Site Coordinator in the day-to-day operations of the program. Group leaders will build strong positive youth-adult relationships. Each group leader is assigned to one cohort of 15-20 students during our Enrichment block, but helps support all students during the rest of the program day. Group Leaders lead games and activities to build students’ social emotional skills, develop skills and interest in hands-on STEM and creative activities. Within their assigned Enrichment group, group leaders provide extra support in small groups or 1:1 with students and help to engage students and reinforce behavior expectations and routines.

Applicants must have completed high school /GED and ideally some college, and have 2 or more years experience working with groups of youth in a school or camp setting.

Program hours: Expanding Horizons is seeking one Group Leader to work on Mondays and Wednesdays during the 9-week Spring session that will run April 6-June 11 (not during April vacation). The program runs from 3:15-5:45 pm. Staff are onsite from 3:00-6:00. Program staff may occasionally be asked to stay late for team meetings or trainings (paid time).

If the new hire is a good fit for the program , a 5-week Summer program position (8:15 AM - 2:45 PM) might be an option as well as continuing with the afterschool position in the next school year (SY 26-27).

Job Description and Responsibilities:

  • Aid students in transition from school to program, addressing any needs or concerns students identify.
  • Plan and facilitate games and activities for students to play that build social-emotional and communication skills, develop peer and adult-peer relations, help build reflection and critical thinking skills, and offer opportunities for fun.
  • Lead career exploration experiences (detailed lesson plans provided)
  • Assist facilitators in helping students engage in project-based learning and enrichment activities.
  • Supervise student snack and meal breaks.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students.
  • Assure all students are learning, have a voice in decisions, and are having fun
  • Support accommodations for students on IEPs and Behavior Plans. ·
  • Support students in following the program’s health and safety procedures.
  • Communicate specific student needs to Site Coordinator

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required and some college preferred (must be a minimum of 19 years old and have completed HS/GED)
  • Previous experience working with youth (older than preschool) in a school, after school, and/or summer program (prior experience working with MS students strongly preferred)
  • Experience working with middle school youth from diverse backgrounds, preferred, not required.
  • Proven ability to engage, motivate, and inspire students to learn
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexible and adaptive work ethic
  • Passionate about positive youth development and social emotional learning
  • Proficiency in Spanish preferred but not required

Compensation: $19-25 an hour depending on experience
