Job Summary

Leake Engineering is seeking a Project Structural Engineer to support a wide range of building and infrastructure projects across commercial, residential, institutional, and governmental sectors. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who is ready to independently manage structural engineering projects, lead technical efforts, and contribute meaningfully to project delivery.

Working closely with Professional Engineers, Project Managers, and multidisciplinary design teams, you will lead structural analysis, design, and coordination from initial assessment through construction. The position offers hands-on involvement in all phases of project development, including field investigations, existing building evaluations, adaptive reuse projects, construction support, and direct collaboration with clients, contractors, architects, and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the analysis and design of structural systems, including gravity and lateral load-resisting systems for buildings and structures.
  • Lead structural engineering projects from proposal through construction.
  • Perform structural analysis and design of gravity and lateral load-resisting systems for buildings and structures.
  • Prepare structural calculations, engineering reports, design narratives, and technical documentation in accordance with applicable building codes and industry standards.
  • Develop and review structural drawings and details using AutoCAD while coordinating with architectural, civil, geotechnical, and MEP disciplines.
  • Perform site visits, structural assessments, existing-condition evaluations, construction observations, and field investigations.
  • Develop practical, cost-effective structural solutions for renovations, adaptive reuse projects, and existing buildings.
  • Provide on-site problem solving during construction by responding to field conditions, contractor questions, RFIs, and unforeseen structural issues.
  • Support the preservation and rehabilitation of existing and historic structures through thoughtful engineering solutions.
  • Coordinate directly with clients, architects, contractors, developers, and regulatory agencies throughout project execution.
  • Coordinate with the City of Philadelphia Department of Licenses & Inspections (L&I) and other local agencies to support permitting, plan review, and regulatory approvals.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs for conformance with design intent.
  • Assist with quality control reviews to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Support project schedules, task tracking, budgeting, and internal project coordination.
  • Attend client meetings, coordination meetings, and internal design reviews.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and engineering staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
  • 5–7 years of structural engineering design or consulting experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or the ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Working knowledge of structural analysis and design software.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Experience designing structures utilizing steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.
  • Experience evaluating existing buildings, renovations, adaptive reuse projects, and structural modifications.
  • Familiarity with applicable building codes and standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, and related design standards.
  • Experience communicating effectively with clients, contractors, architects, and municipal agencies throughout project development.
  • Knowledge of Philadelphia permitting processes and experience coordinating with the City of Philadelphia Department of Licenses & Inspections (L&I) is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while working independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Work Environment

This position is primarily work-from-home, with periodic field work and site visits required. Proximity to the Philadelphia area is required to support site inspections, client meetings, construction observations, and coordination with local agencies.
