Job Description: LEAD Staffing is currently seeking experienced Garage Mechanic ( Diesel & Heavy Equipment )in Tampa. The Garage Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of diesel-powered vehicles, heavy equipment, and support machinery used in shipyard and industrial operations. This position ensures all fleet vehicles and equipment are maintained in safe working condition to support daily operations while minimizing downtime.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and fuel system issues on diesel-powered equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance services including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, fluid checks, and scheduled inspections.
  • Repair and maintain heavy equipment including forklifts, loaders, excavators, cranes, boom lifts, man lifts, generators, compressors, and other industrial machinery.
  • Repair diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering, suspension, cooling systems, and exhaust systems.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems using diagnostic equipment and manufacturer software when applicable.
  • Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication repairs as needed.
  • Inspect equipment to identify worn or damaged parts and recommend repairs or replacement.
  • Maintain service records, repair documentation, and preventative maintenance logs.
  • Operate diagnostic tools, hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and shop machinery safely.
  • Respond to emergency equipment breakdowns to minimize operational downtime.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and environmental requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and equipment operators regarding repair status and maintenance needs.
  • Assist with inventory control by identifying parts and supplies needed for repairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical or vocational training in diesel mechanics preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience repairing diesel engines and heavy equipment.
  • Experience working on industrial or shipyard equipment preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read service manuals, wiring diagrams, and repair schematics.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL is a plus.
  • ASE Diesel Certification or equivalent certifications are preferred but not required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Knowledge of diesel engine repair and preventative maintenance.
  • Familiarity with computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple repairs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Good verbal communication and teamwork skills.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work around noise, vibration, dust, grease, and diesel fumes.
  • Must be able to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

 

Work Environment

This position is performed in a garage and shipyard environment with exposure to moving machinery, heavy equipment, elevated work areas, varying weather conditions, and industrial hazards. Strict adherence to all company safety policies and OSHA regulations is required.
