Inventory Photographer (Part-Time)

Location: Le Mars Chevrolet GMC Le Mars, IA
Reports to: Regional Team and Store Management
Pay: $12.00 to $16.00 per hour
Schedule: Part-time, approximately [15 to 25] hours per week, flexible on days, daylight hours required

What this job is

Every vehicle we own has to be online with a full, correct photo set before it can sell. Cars with bad photos sit. Cars with no interior shots get skipped by shoppers who are three swipes deep on their phone.

You are the person who makes sure that never happens at our store. You photograph every new and used unit on the lot, in the order we want them, and get them loaded into our inventory system the same day.

This is a straightforward, independent, get-it-done role. If you like being outside, working off a checklist, and finishing the day with something visibly done, you will like this job.

What you will do

  • Photograph every new arrival within 24 hours of it being ready for the front line
  • Shoot the full Coleman sequence on every unit (see the shot list below), typically 25 to 45 photos per vehicle
  • Upload and order photos in VinCue, our inventory system (we will train you on this)
  • Move vehicles into position for shooting, which means driving units around the lot
  • Check that the car is presentable before shooting: clean glass, no price stickers or plate frames blocking the shot, nothing left in the seats or cargo area
  • Flag units that are not ready (dirty, damaged, missing keys) instead of shooting them anyway
  • Re-shoot units after reconditioning, detail, or a price or trim correction
  • Keep a running list of what has been shot and what is still waiting

The shot list

Every unit gets these, in this order:

  • Hero exterior. Front three-quarter angle, full vehicle in frame.
  • Dashboard. The wide cabin view showing dash, steering wheel, and center console together, usually shot through an open passenger door. Not a tight gauge-cluster shot.
  • Front seats. Both front buckets in one frame, from an open door.
  • Back seat. Full rear bench or second row.
  • Third row. If the vehicle has one, seats up. A cargo shot with the third row folded flat does not count.
  • Radio. Straight-on shot of the audio screen with the dash surround visible around it. The audio screen specifically, not the climate screen, backup camera, or app menu.
  • Specialty features. Sunroof, bed cover, tow package, engine badging, and similar selling points.
  • Full exterior walkaround. All four corners, both profiles, wheels, engine bay, cargo area.

Two things we have had problems with in the past and need you to get right: crew cab trucks and three-row SUVs regularly come back with no rear seat photo, and newer SUVs regularly come back with a climate screen instead of the audio screen. Both cost us listing quality.

No photos of the building, the lot, or other vehicles. No blurry, dark, or half-loaded frames.

What you need

  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record (you will be moving inventory)
  • Comfortable working outdoors year round, including cold and heat
  • Able to walk the lot, stand, kneel, and crouch for most of a shift
  • Reliable and self-directed, since much of this is unsupervised
  • Basic comfort with a phone, tablet, or computer for uploading
  • Detail oriented enough to notice a missing shot before the unit goes live

What helps but is not required

  • Photography experience of any kind, hobby or professional
  • Prior dealership, lot porter, or detail experience
  • Your own camera gear (we provide equipment)

Why work here

Coleman Automotive Group has grown from one store to seven rooftops in about two years. We hire people who own their work and we promote from the inside. Plenty of people on our sales and management teams started somewhere on the lot. If you want this to be a steady part-time job, that works. If you want it to be a door into the car business, that works too.
