POSITION: Construction Controller
REPORTS TO: VP of Accounting

SUMMARY
The Construction Controller will lead and manage all accounting operations for a multifamily construction company, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with industry regulations. This role is critical in supporting project profitability, managing cost controls, and providing strategic financial insights across multiple active developments.
RESPONSIBILITIES (Including but not limited to)
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Ensure timely and accurate job cost reporting for all construction projects.
- Manage general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and fixed assets.
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes.
Construction Accounting & Job Costing
- Monitor and analyze project budgets, costs, and variances.
- Collaborate with project managers to ensure accurate cost tracking and forecasting.
- Maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Ensure proper revenue recognition in accordance with applicable standards.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Develop and enforce internal accounting policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and relevant construction accounting standards.
- Coordinate audits and work with external auditors, tax advisors, and lenders.
- Monitor and manage risk, including contract compliance and lien waivers.
Cash Flow & Budgeting
- Manage company cash flow, forecasting, and liquidity planning.
- Oversee project-level and corporate budgeting processes.
- Monitor draws, loan covenants, and financing requirements for developments.
Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a high-performance culture.
- Improve systems, workflows, and reporting processes for efficiency and accuracy.
- Partner cross-functionally with operations, development, and executive leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
- 7–10 years of accounting experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role.
- Experience in construction or real estate development (multifamily preferred).
- Strong knowledge of job costing and construction financial management.
Skills & Competencies
- Deep understanding of GAAP and construction accounting principles.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage300, Yardi, RealPage, or similar ERP systems).
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.

WORK CONDITIONS
You are required to work in enclosed office spaces in a climate-controlled environment. Noise levels will be moderate due to office equipment, foot traffic, telephones, and meetings. This position requires travel as needed to support portfolio oversight and business in multiple states.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
To successfully perform the essential functions of this role, employees must be able to engage in routine physical activities, including standing, walking, climbing, stooping, squatting, and using their hands for typing and handling materials.
Employees must be capable of lifting or moving items up to 10 pounds and possess adequate visual abilities, including close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel may be required.
