Carolina Construction School was established in in 2016 to develop comprehensive training programs tailored to the operational needs of the construction industry. We are currently seeking Commercial Driving Instructors for both full-time weekday instruction classes as well as for weekend instruction classes.
Job Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Commercial Driving Instructor to join our team at Carolina Construction School. In this vital role, you will train aspiring commercial drivers in the safe operation of various heavy-duty vehicles, including tractor-trailers and trucks with manual transmissions. You will deliver engaging classroom instruction and hands-on driving lessons that adhere to FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations and DOT (Department of Transportation) standards. Your expertise will empower students to become confident, compliant, and responsible commercial drivers ready to exc· Provide instruction in CDL theory, vehicle inspection, basic control skills, range maneuvers, and public-road driving in accordance with applicable SCDMV, FMCSA, ELDT, and school curriculum requirements.
- Train students to safely operate commercial motor vehicles, including combination vehicles, straight trucks, and applicable trailer configurations used in construction and transportation environments.
- Use the classroom, range, and vehicle as instructional environments to reinforce safe driving habits, defensive driving techniques, vehicle control, hazard awareness, and professional driver conduct.
- Prepare lesson plans, training activities, student assessments, instructional materials, equipment, and required documentation before each training session.
- Evaluate student progress through observation, skills assessments, road performance reviews, attendance tracking, and documented feedback.
- Identify students requiring additional coaching or remediation and provide clear, constructive guidance to support safe and successful CDL preparation.
- Maintain accurate and timely training records, including attendance sheets, daily logs, performance profiles, inspection forms, student progress documentation, and other records required by the school, SCDMV, or FMCSA.
- Conduct and document pre-trip and post-trip inspections of training vehicles and equipment; report safety concerns, maintenance needs, or compliance issues promptly to the CCS Administrator.
- Support curriculum updates, program improvement, compliance reviews, and student readiness initiatives by providing practical feedback to school leadership.
- Model professionalism, punctuality, safety, respectful communication, and adherence to school policies, dress code, and conduct expectations.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Current, valid CDL Class A license, or the commercial license class required for the instruction being provided.
- Must meet applicable commercial driving instructor requirements and maintain any required SCDMV commercial driver training instructor permit or approval.
- Must meet applicable FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training instructor qualifications and support the school’s Training Provider Registry compliance obligations.
- Minimum of two (2) years of verifiable commercial motor vehicle driving experience; construction, dump truck, lowboy, tanker, equipment hauling, or heavy highway industry experience preferred.
- Must maintain a valid DOT medical certification and be able to comply with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
- Must be able to provide an acceptable motor vehicle record and meet school, insurance, SCDMV, and regulatory driving standards.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to explain technical driving concepts clearly to adult learners.
- Ability to coach, correct, encourage, and evaluate students in a professional and safety-focused manner.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate training records, schedules, inspection documents, and student progress reports.
- Working knowledge of commercial driver training requirements, safe vehicle operation, pre-trip inspection standards, hours-of-service concepts, and commercial vehicle safety practices.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
