Executive Director – Lee County Black History Society
Location: Fort Myers, FL
Salary: $80,000 – $100,000 (based on experience)
Reports to: Board of Directors

About the OrganizationThe Lee County Black History Society preserves and shares the history and contributions of African Americans in Lee County and beyond. Through exhibits, programs, and events, the Society and the Williams Academy Museum provide education and inspiration for the community.
Position SummaryThe Executive Director is the organization’s leader and is responsible for daily operations, long-term planning, fundraising, and community relationships. This role ensures the organization continues to grow and fulfill its mission.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Strategy
- Carry out the organization’s strategic plan with the Board and staff
- Lead programs, operations, and overall direction
- Build a positive and inclusive work culture
- Serve as the main spokesperson for the organization
Operations & Staff Management
- Oversee daily operations, including exhibits and visitor services
- Manage staff hiring, training, and performance
- Ensure policies, standards, and legal requirements are followed
- Support marketing and outreach efforts
Financial Management
- Develop and manage the annual budget
- Ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance
- Work with the Board on financial planning
- Identify and grow funding sources
Fundraising & Development
- Lead fundraising efforts, including grants and events
- Build relationships with donors and partners
- Increase membership and community support
Programs & Museum Oversight
- Support development of exhibits and programs
- Ensure content is accurate and culturally respectful
- Build partnerships with schools and community organizations
Community Relations
- Represent the organization in the community
- Build relationships with local leaders and partners
- Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion
Board Relations
- Work closely with the Board of Directors
- Provide regular updates and reports
- Support Board engagement and recruitment
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required (related field preferred)
- Master’s degree is a plus
Experience
- 7–10 years of leadership experience (nonprofit, museum, or similar)
- Experience in fundraising and financial management
- Experience working with a Board of Directors
- Proven leadership of staff and volunteers
Skills
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication and public speaking
- Budgeting and financial knowledge
- Fundraising and grant writing experience
- Ability to work with diverse groups
