HPC Simulation Engineer

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Applied Mathematics and Computational Research Division has an opening for an HPC Simulation Engineer to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will help conduct fundamental and applied research in parallel discrete event simulation, load balancing, task scheduling, and reversible computation.

What You Will Do:

• Build software that implements novel parallel discrete event simulation techniques, algorithms, and runtimes targeting high performance computing (HPC) platforms.
• Analyze the performance of simulations, identify key bottlenecks, and understand parallel scaling behavior for various application workloads, including computer hardware simulation, transportation systems, disease modeling, and geophysical systems.
• Work with application domain and high performance computing experts to optimize parallel execution performance on HPC platforms.
• Assist with publication and presentation of research results in journals and conferences in the areas of parallel simulation and computational science (domain science and engineering).
• Participate in requested assignments, including releasing and documenting code, writing publications, and reporting results to sponsors.
• Work on and resolve problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. 
• Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. 
• Build productive internal/external working relationships.

What is Required:

• BS or MS degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related technical field.
• At least 2 years of experience developing software in C for parallel computing environments.
• Proficiency in modern C (C 11 or later).
• Experience with parallel application performance analysis and optimization.
• Familiarity with performance optimization libraries, tools, and techniques.
• Familiarity with task-based or discrete event programming models.
• Familiarity with software engineering tools such as make and git.
• Ability to reason about the correctness and performance of asynchronous, parallel programs.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team.

Desired Qualifications:

• BS or MS degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related technical field and 5 years of experience developing software in C for parallel computing environments.

• This is a full time, 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
