Job Summary
The Controller oversees and leads the day-to-day operations of the accounting department, including payroll, AP/AR, and project accounting, while leading a high-performing team. This role provides operational support to the CFO with financial reporting, budgeting, and cash management, and drives process improvements and automation initiatives. The Controller also mentors the accounting staff as well as fosters cross-functional collaboration.
Duties & Responsibilities
Team Oversight
- Build and mentor the accounting team establishing training, accountability, and high standards for accuracy and performance.
- Manage day-to-day accounting operations across payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and project accounting.
- Assist with the development and implementation of policies and procedures for accounting and financial processes.
Strategic Support
- Provide the CFO with timely operational and financial metrics for decision-making.
- Contribute to cash management, forecasting, and budgeting processes.
- Assist in system improvements, software implementations, and automation initiatives to increase efficiency and enhance financial processes.
Financial Reporting
- Lead all aspects of the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Cash Management & Line of Credit
- Reconcile all bank accounts each month in a timely manner.
- Monitor cash requirements and coordinate with CFO for cash disbursements.
- Track weekly cash receipts.
- Clear all positive pay exceptions daily.
- Maintain security of signature stamp; stamp all checks being processed (i.e. invoices, garnishments, reimbursements, etc.).
- Prepare borrowing base calculation each month to ensure borrowing capacity and cash flow.
Payroll & Labor Compliance
- Supervise payroll operations through the Payroll Manager and team, ensuring timely and accurate processing of payroll.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and other labor requirements, including prevailing wage and certified payroll reporting.
Accounts Payable
- Supervise accounts payable operations through the Senior AP Specialist and team, ensuring timely processing of vendor invoices, subcontractor payments, lien waivers, and 1099 compliance.
- Ensure proper approval workflows and adherence to company purchasing policies.
- Setup new AP Vendors in ERP, including employees for reimbursements.
Project Accounting, Billing & Accounts Receivable
- Supervise the Project Accountant in ensuring project cost tracking, percent complete reporting, and WIP schedules are accurate and timely.
- Oversee timely and accurate billing processes, including progress billings, change orders, and retention tracking.
- Oversee contract compliance, including owner reporting requirements and lien releases.
- Monitor collections, aging reports, and customer credit limits.
- Lead resolution of billing disputes and ensure proper cash application.
Tax & Regulatory Compliance
- Oversee preparation and filing of all non-income tax returns, including sales/use tax, payroll taxes, W2’s, property tax, 1099’s, environmental filings, and other required filings.
- Annual escheatment of stale payroll checks.
- Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors as needed.
Strategic Support
- Provide the CFO with timely operational and financial metrics for decision-making.
- Contribute to cash management, forecasting, and budgeting processes.
- Assist in system improvements, software implementations, and automation initiatives to increase efficiency.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Manage, mentor, and develop direct reports: Payroll Manager, Project Accountant, and Senior AP Specialist.
- Establish clear performance expectations and professional development goals for accounting staff.
- Foster collaboration between finance, IT, human resources, operations, and sales/estimating teams.

Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration required.
- Ten years or more of related experience required.
- Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred.

Salary : $122,720 - $174,720
