Job Description
We have an opening for an Industrial Safety Professional. You will provide industrial safety support for LLNL programs and operations requiring a broad application of practices and procedures. You will interact with various levels of personnel from the ES&H Directorate and LLNL programs that you are assigned to support. This position is in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home up to one day per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

$107,610- $136,500 Annually for the TSS.1 level
$129,150- $163,764 Annually for the TSS.2 level
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

You will
- Provide industrial safety support to LLNL programs and operations in specific areas of assignment using standard techniques and methods that are well-defined.
- Investigate accidents/incidents and reports of occupational injury/illness of limited complexity that typically consist of readily identifiable factors; identify possible root causes, prepare necessary documentation, make basic recommendations and implement appropriate solutions (under general direction) to help eliminate exposure to these risks and prevent injury, while also providing basic emergency response support to safety incidents on-site.
- Evaluate industrial and construction-related activities of limited complexity while working under general direction; conduct health and safety (H&S) evaluations and inspections of buildings, facilities, equipment, and apparatus to identify H&S related hazards/deficiencies and provide recommendations to resolve safety-related issues.
- Contribute as part of the ES&H team to the review of results of H&S compliance audits and inspections with management, provide well-defined recommendations for correction (and prevention of recurrence) of non-compliance findings, and identify necessary follow-up measures to ensure future compliance.
- Advise Laboratory scientists, engineers, and other programmatic personnel in developing solutions to safety-related problems of limited complexity.
- Write and review technical reports and review and evaluate new H&S standards, procedures, drawings, and diagrams for conformance to Department of Energy (DOE) standards and other applicable requirements.
- Review Facility Safety Plans, Work Control Documents, Safety Analysis Reports, Engineering Designs, subcontractor H&S submittals and other technical documents in collaboration with program management while contributing as part of an ES&H team; ensure availability of well-defined Discipline Action Plans (DAPs) for specific areas of coverage using the generic DAP provided by the Worker Safety and Health (WSH) Functional Area.
- Satisfactorily complete the Discipline qualification plan requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Provide comprehensive industrial safety support to LLNL programs and operations in specific areas of assignment while working under limited direction.
- Advise Laboratory scientists, engineers, and other programmatic personnel in developing solutions to moderately complex to complex safety-related problems that are broadly defined.
- Develop and present safety courses in industrial safety or related topics.
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific, technical or health and safety related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Fundamental knowledge in industrial safety which may include the following: construction safety, material handling, electrical safety, working at elevated heights, ergonomics, laboratory research, and/or state and federal safety regulations.
- Experience with and fundamental knowledge of any combination of the following skills: industrial safety plans, emergency response, inspections, risk assessment, audits, and/or reports.
- Analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to evaluate, interpret, make well-defined recommendations and implement actions/solutions for problems of limited complexity.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and communicate technical information to various personnel.
- Experience building working relationships and trust with a customer base, a strong customer service ethos, and results driven orientation.
- Ability to utilize standard techniques and methods while working under general direction and in a team environment with an assigned cross-section of people and organizations, supporting adjacent projects, and meeting schedules.
- Broad experience in a combination of the following: construction safety, material handling, electrical safety, working at elevated heights, ergonomics, laboratory research, and/or occupational health and safety.
- Comprehensive knowledge of related state and federal regulations and other consensus standards as well as experience utilizing analytical problem-solving skills to evaluate, make recommendations for, and implement actions/ solutions for broadly defined health and safety problems.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and communicate moderately complex to complex safety training and information to a variety of stakeholders.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
- Knowledge of Department of Energy (DOE) Orders.
- Hands on experience supporting LLNL or another DOE national laboratory in an industrial safety, or H&S technician capacity, including walkthroughs, inspections, and sampling under the direction of an ISP or IH.
- Active U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance.
