What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legal Assistant Paralegal position at Law Office of Jacob Goad (El Abogado Jacobo)?
About the firm
The Law Office of Jacob Goad represents injured workers and accident victims across North Carolina. A significant portion of our practice serves Spanish-speaking clients — workers and families navigating the workers' compensation and personal injury systems in a language and legal framework that wasn't built for them. Our team is small, technically sophisticated, and serious about doing this work well.
About the role
We are hiring a bilingual Legal Assistant to join our team and grow with us. This is not a temporary or stopgap position. We are looking for someone who wants to build a career in plaintiffs' law and who, with our investment, will complete the Paralegal Certificate Program through NC State University's distance education program. We will pay for your tuition, fees, and study time. You bring the work ethic, the language skills, and the discretion.
You will be the bridge between our Spanish-speaking clients and the rest of the team — the first voice they hear, the person who explains what a Form 18 is, the one who keeps their case moving when life gets in the way.
What you'll do
Conduct initial client intakes in Spanish and English, in person, by phone, and by video
Translate client communications, medical records summaries, settlement documents, and demand correspondence between Spanish and English
Open and maintain case files in Clio, our case management system
Request and organize medical records, employment records, wage documentation, and accident reports
Prepare and file North Carolina Industrial Commission forms (18, 33, 28, 26A, and others) under attorney supervision
Schedule client appointments, depositions, mediations, and medical evaluations
Support attorneys and senior paralegals in mediation preparation, demand package assembly, and trial preparation
Communicate with insurance adjusters, opposing counsel's offices, medical providers, and court personnel
Keep clients informed about the status of their cases with the kind of regular, clear communication we believe they deserve
What we're looking for
Full fluency in Spanish and English, written and spoken. You should be comfortable reading a medical record in English and explaining it to a client in Spanish, and translating a sworn statement in Spanish into accurate English
Strong writing in both languages
Organization, follow-through, and the ability to track many moving pieces without losing the thread
Comfort with technology — we run on Clio, Microsoft 365, RingCentral, OneDrive, and AI-assisted tools, and we expect everyone to be fluent in them
Genuine interest in plaintiffs' work and in serving working-class clients
A long-term mindset and willingness to commit to completing the NC State Paralegal Certificate Program with our support
What we're not requiring
Prior law firm experience
A paralegal certificate or paralegal degree
A specific college background
If you have those things, great. If you don't and you're sharp, bilingual, and serious about this career, we want to talk to you.
What we offer
Competitive salary based on experience and demonstrated ability — compensation is not where we cut corners
Full firm sponsorship of the NC State University Paralegal Certificate Program, including tuition, fees, and dedicated study time
Mentorship from a team of experienced paralegals and attorneys
Health benefits, paid holidays, paid time off, and retirement contributions
A firm where your work directly changes outcomes for people who would otherwise be steamrolled by insurance companies and employers
Traditional hours 8-5 (Monday-Friday), with flexibility based on circumstances.
How to apply
Send a resume and a short cover letter — in either English or Spanish, your choice — to mandy@jgoadlaw.com. Tell us why this work interests you. We read every application. There will be an in-person interview, so fluency in Spanish is required. Please do not apply if you do not feel comfortable with conversational Spanish.
