What does an HR assistant do?
The HR assistant duties involve a wide range of support activities inside our HR department, from maintaining our employee database to posting job ads. An important part of your role will be to act as the liaison between HR and employees, ensuring smooth communication and prompt resolution of requests and questions. You’ll also assist in maintain the HRIS system and daily processes including payroll processing.
HR Assistant qualifications
HR assistant skills we’re looking for include excellent organization ability, basic knowledge and understanding of human resource principles, practices, procedures with strong communication skills. To be an ideal candidate for the human resources assistant position, you should also hold an Associated degree and/or certification in a related field, ability to work autonomously, remain calm under pressure, and maintain confidentiality.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date personnel files, records, documentation, and database.
- Answers frequently asked questions from employees relative to standard policies, benefits, hiring processes, etc.; refers more complex questions to HR Business Partner or management.
- Provides clerical support to the HR department.
- May assist with payroll functions including processing, answering employee questions, fixing processing errors, and distributes checks.
- Completes Forms I-9, verifies I-9 documentation and maintains I-9 files.
- Assists with new-employee background checks and drug screening.
- Conducts and assists audits of payroll, benefits or other HR programs, HR files, and recommends corrective action.
- Assists with processing of onboarding and offboarding paperwork (i.e. status change forms, 401k Withdrawal form, benefits booklets, etc.)
- Assists with the preparation of the performance review process.
- Assists with recruitment and interview process. Tracks status of candidates in HRIS and responds with follow-up letters at the end of the recruiting process.
- Conducts or assists with onboarding, new hire orientation, and training sessions.
- Assists with planning and execution of special events such as benefits enrollment, organization-wide meetings, employee recognition events, holiday parties, and retirement celebrations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- Associated degree and/or certification in related field
- 1-2 years experience in Human Resources
- Basic knowledge and understanding of human resource principles, practices, and procedures.
- Payroll software and processing experience is a plus
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to function well in a high-paced environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
