School-Based Therapist (Elementary School)

LaVante’ N. Dorsey & Associates

STOP HERE FIRST

Before you go any further, be honest with yourself:

  • You don’t just “see clients”—you show up for children in moments that matter
  • You’ve noticed when a child was struggling before anyone else said a word
  • You understand that behavior is communication—and you know how to respond with both clinical skill and heart
  • You don’t wait to be told what a child needs—you advocate, collaborate, and act

If that’s not just what you want to do—but what you already do—keep reading.

ABOUT US

At LaVante’ N. Dorsey & Associates, we are not just a therapy practice.

We are a mental health movement inside schools and communities.

Founded by LaVante' N. Dorsey, our work goes beyond individual sessions to include:

  • School-based therapy and behavioral health support
  • The True2U Mental Health Assembly experience
  • Group interventions for students
  • Family engagement and community impact

We believe mental health support should not be something students have to seek out—
it should meet them where they are.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

This is not a “sit in your office and wait” therapy role.

You are:

  • A key part of the school’s behavioral health team
  • A safe space for students
  • A collaborator with teachers, staff, and families
  • A bridge between mental health and education

You will:

  • Provide individual and group therapy
  • Support emotional regulation and behavioral needs
  • Help shape a school culture where students feel seen, safe, and supported

YOUR ROLE IN THE SCHOOL CULTURE

You are not separate from the school—you are part of it.

You:

  • Partner with teachers to support classroom behavior and emotional needs
  • Collaborate with school counselors, administration, and support staff
  • Contribute to behavioral plans and interventions
  • Show up in hallways, classrooms, and moments—not just sessions

Because the goal is not just therapy.

- It’s creating a school environment where mental health is understood and supported daily

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Morning – Setting the Tone

You arrive at the school.

A teacher stops you in the hallway:
“Can you check in with one of my students today? Something feels off.”

You make a note—because you know early support matters.

Mid-Morning – Student Sessions

You meet with a student struggling with emotional regulation.

You:

  • Help them name what they feel
  • Teach grounding or coping skills
  • Create a plan they can actually use in class

This isn’t just a session.
This is giving a child tools they may carry for life.

Midday – Collaboration

You meet with the behavioral health team.

You:

  • Share insights (while maintaining confidentiality)
  • Problem-solve challenging behaviors
  • Align on strategies that support the student across environments

You are part of the solution—not working in isolation.

Afternoon – Real-Time Support

A student has an emotional outburst.

You:

  • Step in calmly
  • De-escalate
  • Help them regulate
  • Support staff in understanding what the behavior means

Because moments like this matter just as much as sessions.

End of Day – Documentation & Reflection

You:

  • Complete clinical notes
  • Track progress
  • Identify students who may need additional support

And you reflect:

-Who needs more support tomorrow?
-What patterns are emerging?
-How can I show up better?

WHAT WINNING LOOKS LIKE (FIRST 90 DAYS)

By Day 30:

  • You’ve built rapport with students and staff
  • You understand the school’s culture and needs
  • Students recognize you as a safe space

By Day 60:

  • You are actively collaborating with teachers and staff
  • Students are utilizing skills learned in sessions
  • You’ve contributed to behavioral support strategies

By Day 90:

  • You are a trusted member of the school’s behavioral health team
  • You’ve helped improve emotional outcomes for students
  • Your presence is making a measurable difference in the school climate

YOU’RE A GREAT FIT IF YOU:

  • Connect naturally with children and build trust quickly
  • Understand trauma-informed care and emotional development
  • Are flexible and able to respond in real time
  • Communicate effectively with both children and adults
  • Value collaboration and being part of a team
  • Are passionate about early intervention and impact

THIS ROLE IS NOT FOR YOU IF:

  • You prefer strictly structured, predictable sessions only
  • You struggle with flexibility in fast-paced environments
  • You prefer working independently without team collaboration
  • You are uncomfortable being visible and engaged throughout the school

WHAT YOU’LL HELP BUILD

  • A school culture where mental health is normalized
  • Students who feel safe expressing emotions
  • Classrooms that better understand behavior and regulation
  • Systems that support students beyond one-on-one sessions

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

This is bigger than therapy.

You are helping:

  • A child feel understood for the first time
  • A student learn how to regulate emotions
  • A teacher feel supported in difficult moments
  • A school move toward a healthier culture

FINAL NOTE

This role is for someone who understands:

Mental health in schools is not just about sessions.

It’s about presence.
It’s about relationships.
It’s about impact.
