Job Title: Psychiatric Advanced Practice Professional

FLSA: Exempt

Reports To: Director, Outpatient Psychiatric Services

Department: Behavioral Health Services

Summary

The Psychiatric Advanced Practice Professional is expected to perform their duties to support the goals and objectives of Laurel Life in its efforts to provide quality service and patient satisfaction.?The Advanced Practice Professionalwill provide primary psychiatric assessment and care to clients of the organization including making diagnoses, determining course of treatment, providing appropriate treatment and treatment planning, completing vitals, prescribing medications, reviewing/approving prior authorizations, reviewing lab work, monitoring blood levels, and documenting patient files.

Commitment to these principles in trauma treatment will be required through attendance in trainings and use of identified evidence-based practices.? Trauma informed care includes cultural sensitivity and emphasizes a safe and respectful environment for all clients and staff.?

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial patient evaluations; take detailed identifying data, chief complaint, history of present illness, past psychiatric treatment, medical history, social history, family history, mental status examination, diagnostic impression, ICD-10 diagnoses and recommendations.
  • Diagnoseindividuals based on symptoms and prior medical treatment.
  • Treat psychiatric conditions in individuals using a treatment modality such as person centered, psychoanalytic, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, structural family therapy, solution focused brief therapy, etc.
  • Review and explain treatment plans to individuals, parents, guardians or other supports and clients to provide psycho-education in the outpatient mental health clinic.
  • Recommend appropriate treatment for all patients, especially with regard to different levels of care, educational needs, and referrals to other organizations.
  • Provides consultation with psychiatric and social service professionals as needed. Refers patient correspondence inquiries to Patient Care Coordinator or Supervisor. Refers residential treatment facility recommendations to Psychiatrist.
  • Prescribe medication on a conservative basis to treat verifiable mental health diagnoses and review psycho-education information (side effects, risks and benefits, etc.).
  • Ability to provide PA Child Abuse, PA Criminal Record Check, FBI Clearance, and Mandated Reporting ACT 31 as needed per PA State Regulations.
  • Uphold agency policies and standards as well as ethical standards of appropriate discipline.
  • Collaborate with Director of Outpatient Psychiatric Services, Psychiatrists, Outpatient Supervisor, Team Leaders, Cliniciansand Admission Specialists to provide triage evaluation, crisis intervention, and treatment recommendations.
  • Complete documentation and paperworkin a timely manner as required by Laurel Life, Department of Human Services, and Managed Care Organizations.This includes progress notes, review of patient lab work, and prior authorization requests for medications. Refers patient correspondence inquiries for completion of letters, forms, etc. to Patient Care Coordinator or Supervisor.
  • Participate in and complete staff training courses/programs as required by Laurel Life, Department of Human Services, Managed Care Organizations, and Commonwealth of PA Department of State Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs.
  • Provide psychiatric supervision, per 55 PA CODE CHS. 1153 and 5200, to monitor all treatment plans on a regular basis and provide consultation as necessary for the clients and services provided.
  • Assist clients to gain insight, define goals, and plan action to achieve effective personal, social, educational, and vocational development and adjustment.
  • Consult reference material, such as professional websites, textbooks, manuals, and journals, to identify symptoms, make diagnoses, and develop approach to treatment.
  • Respond to client reactions, evaluates effectiveness of medication management services, counseling or treatment recommendations, and modifiesplan as needed.
  • May perform other special projects or duties as requested by the CEO, Division VP, Director of Outpatient Services, or Direct Supervisor.

Skills

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to develop effective and meaningful relationships with clients.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Use of evidence based psychiatric mental health nursing and psychopharmacology
  • Willingness to learn and follow clinic's standards of practice.
  • Demonstrable ability to connect with and provide support for all age groups served; including children and adolescents.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems.
  • Must be able to remain calm in a crisis situation, identify underlying causes of problem situations, resolve conflicts, and de-escalate potentially explosive situations.

Educational Requirements

  • Current unrestricted Pennsylvania License as a Physician Assistant (PA) or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) AND
  • Current psychiatric mental health certification OR obtains certification within 2 years of hire.
  • Experience working with children and youth preferred.
  • Current DEA license required.
  • Prescriptive rights.
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screening.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work setting is an outpatient office. Clientele may at times be verbally or physically abusive.
