How often do Skill Days happen?
- There is a minimum of 3 Skill Days for each 7.5-week course for both Semester 1 students and Semester 2 students. We have found that this is the minimum needed to learn, practice, and achieve each skill.
- 6 Skill Days every 7.5 weeks - 3 for Semester 1 students and 3 for Semester 2 students.
- Currently, skill days are running on the same day of the week for each semester at the Uniontown campus. We’ve found that it is best to be able to have a dedicated day of the week for skills to help students who work and/or need babysitters to have an easier time coordinating their schedules and minimize attendance issues.
- It is also most beneficial to be able to have skill days scheduled for at least 5 to 6 hours each day to make sure there is enough time to get through everything needed each skill day.
- Skill days should be flexible to allow students from a different semester to come in and do extra practice when necessary. Example: a 1-semester student needs or wants extra practice on BPs, so that student comes in on the skill day(s) with the 2-semester students to practice BPs.
What are the courses that accompany the Skills Days?
- Semester 1 students take Patient Assessment and Phlebotomy
- Semester 2 students take Clinical Office Operations and Clinical Diagnostic Procedures
What is included in the day?
- BPs and venipunctures should be performed every skill day, no matter what semester the student is in. This provides students with continual practice to strengthen those skills and confidence in those skills, since they take more time to develop.
- Skill days will consist of doing a demonstration and explaining each skill (if the students do not know how to do the skill yet) and then giving the students practice opportunities to perform the skills until they are ready to sign off on the skill competencies that go along with each class. Skills should be corrected (if needed) as the student practices each skill, and feedback should be provided.
- Each class has a skill competency rubric checklist with steps to complete the skill. These are graded by the last skill day.
- There is a skills checklist available per class for both the instructor and students that lists the skills that will be performed on skills days for the specific class.
- This individual must also be able to teach an EKG class, if needed.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
- Experience with LMS "Canvas" preferred.
