Latin School of Chicago is hiring an Upper School English Teacher for a sabbatical leave coverage for the 2026-2027 school year, with the possibility of a position in the 2027-2028 school year. Latin School of Chicago seeks a creative and innovative Upper School English Teacher who is passionate about teaching literature through critical reading, writing, and thinking instruction; and is looking to join an enthusiastic and collaborative group of educators.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach 4 classes per semester: 2 sections of English 9 (with a shared 9th grade curriculum) and 2 sections of English 10 (option for Latin American Literature or Middle Eastern and South Asian Literature depending on education background and experience)
- Serve as advisor to 8-10 students
- Attend department meetings, division meetings, and all-school faculty/staff meetings
- Co-lead or support an experiential learning Project Week (second week of March)
- Work closely with department members, department chair, and division director to design lesson plans and curriculum that is aligned and responsive to student needs; specifically, work collaboratively with the English 9 team and attend all team meetings
- Write narratives on student progress two times per year
- Cultivate an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students
- Be available to students outside of class time for writing conferences and feedback, as needed
- Attend and supervise students during assemblies, gatherings, and other school functions
Compensation:
- Salary is $64,622 - $114,967 annually, based on education level and years of experience as outlined in our Faculty Scale.

Qualifications:- Master’s degree preferred, Bachelor’s degree required
- 3 years teaching experience at the high school level
- Background, training, and experience teaching from an identity-based perspective
- Experience cultivating an inclusive and supportive climate for all students, especially students from underrepresented backgrounds, and who fosters appreciation for differences in our community
- Commitment to inclusivity, collaboration, and professionalism.
- Critical thinking and reflection skills to assess and improve existing processes
- Strong communication skills, including spoken and written communication
- Commitment to continuous improvement and professional development
- Comfort integrating technology into the classroom and in lessons
- Curating materials in a Course Management System.
