Position Overview
The Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) is responsible for providing education, hands-on support, and resources to families to ensure the safe selection, installation, and use of child safety seats. This role plays a critical part in reducing preventable injuries by empowering caregivers with the knowledge and confidence to transport children safely.
The CPST will conduct one-on-one education, group classes, and community-based events, while also supporting program operations and documentation requirements.
Client Education & Support
- Provide hands-on education to caregivers on proper car seat selection, installation, and usage
- Conduct individualized car seat checks and fittings
- Teach safe transportation practices for infants and children
- Address caregiver questions and provide clear, practical guidance
Workshops & Community Engagement
- Facilitate group education sessions and workshops on child passenger safety
- Support community events such as baby showers, safety events, and outreach initiatives
- Represent the organization at community partner events
Program Support
- Assist with the distribution of car seats and safety-related materials
- Maintain accurate documentation of services provided
- Ensure compliance with program requirements and safety standards
- Support tracking of inventory related to car seats and safety supplies
Operational Support
- Assist with inventory management, including receiving, organizing, and tracking car seat supplies
- Prepare materials and equipment for events and client appointments
- Maintain clean, organized, and client-ready education spaces
Required
- Current Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) Certification
- High school diploma or GED
- Demonstrated experience with car seat and booster seat installation
- Experience teaching or educating caregivers on the proper use of child safety seats
Preferred
- Experience working with families, children, or community-based programs
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Strong communication and teaching skills
- Ability to explain technical information in a clear, approachable way
- Attention to detail, especially regarding safety standards
- Ability to work independently and in community-based settings
- Comfortable working with diverse populations
- Strong organizational and documentation skills
- Monday–Friday with occasional evenings and weekends based on events and program needs
- Work may occur in the office, community settings, partner sites, and outdoor events
- Must be able to lift and install car seats as part of job duties
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
- Ability to bend, kneel, and work inside vehicles for installations
- Ability to stand for extended periods during events and workshops
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if travel is required)
- Ability to maintain CPST certification and complete continuing education as required
