Las Virgenes Unified School District   Job Description: Health Care Technician
Under the direction of the site or District administrator, the Health Care Technician strives tocontribute to the overall mission of the district to create an environment that both promotesacademic excellence and provides an emotionally safe environment for our students. TheHealth Care Technician provides assigned health services related to the medical needs ofstudents, performs first aid and specialized health care services to children. Such services mayrequire specialized training beyond that generally required to obtain a first aid certificate;responsible for recording keeping and clerical duties and to perform other duties as required.   Major duties and responsibilities: ? Assists Principals and School Nurse in maintaining a safe, healthy and sanitary schoolenvironment ? Observes student symptoms and behavior, notifying the certificated school nurse,parents, emergency personnel and school officials as appropriate ? Assists ill or injured students within the boundaries of school law and district regulations ? Administers first aid including CPR/AED ? Advises proper authorities of health problems, emergencies and action taken ? Monitors students with health conditions that require periodic observation andadministration of regularly scheduled medication, all according to written prescription,protocols and instruction ? Communicates and interacts with pertinent staff regarding student health conditions andchanges ? Schedules and makes arrangements for screening at the school location, coordinatingwith school personnel, contacting parents when necessary ? Assists with screening and necessary follow up ? Sets up and maintains individual health records ? Compiles information, lists and statistical reports, forms, and similar material ? Follows up on required immunizations through letters, email, telephone and personalcontact with parents ? Records immunization dates in student health folders and applicable online database ? Uses current computer software as appropriate ? Provides personal care to students such as toileting and diapering ? Assists in lifting in and out of wheelchairs, and/or other orthopedic equipment ? Performs other specialized physical health care services which are prescribed by thestudent’s physician, such as blood glucose monitoring, administering and/or supervisinga student on insulin, insulin pump, or other diabetes devices, catheterization, suctioning,seizure disorders/procedures, inhaler or nebulizer treatments, oxygen administration andflow monitoring, tracheostomy care, ostomy bag care, emergency care and other healthcare related duties as assigned after training and monitoring by a certificated schoolnurse

? Inspects for communicable diseases; as instructed, advises parents, students andteachers of presence of communicable disease, treatment, quarantine requirements andre-admittance procedures; provides factual information to parents and teachers relativeto community health concerns ? Administers emergency medications (ie., Epinephrine Injection, Glucagon, and Diastat) ? Implements and monitors procedures for safe storage and administration of medications;administer prescribed medication in accordance with physician directions and districtpolicy ? Requisitions, stocks and inventories medical, first aid and office supplies as necessary ? Performs a variety of clerical duties related to the maintenance of health records,referrals and reports; and assist other school clerical personnel as required ? Supervises students in the health office ? Provides first aid to ill and injured students and staff in accordance with the EmergencyFirst Aid Guidelines for California schools ? Performs related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: ? Knowledge of policies, objectives and procedures related to the school health programincluding standard health problems associated with school age children ? Knowledge of methods and techniques of lifting and moving injured or physically limitedstudents ? Knowledge of a variety of emergency and health care procedures including first aid, CPRand use of an AED to ensure student wellness and safety ? Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, local and education code laws and regulations ? Knowledge of Universal Precautions ? Knowledge of basic medical terminology. ? Knowledge of communicable disease causes, symptoms, mode of transmission andpreventing spread in a school setting ? Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, record keeping, report preparationand use of equipment ? Knowledge of the English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation, oral and writtencommunication skills ? Knowledge of available community health resources ? Ability to react calmly, effectively and efficiently under stressful situations andemergencies ? Ability to understand and empathize with children having a variety of health care needs ? Ability to learn medical procedures as necessary ? Ability to lift children in and out of wheelchairs, braces, and other orthopedic equipment ? Ability to recognize and report safety hazards ? Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action ? Ability to learn and apply applicable sections of the education code and other pertinenthealth care safety regulations ? Ability to provide information and assistance to parents, the general public and otherstaff members in a helpful, courteous and timely manner ? Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others ? Ability to maintain confidentiality of privileged information ? Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively both orally and in writing ? Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions ? Ability to travel to multiple school sites within a workday; ride school buses as necessary ? Ability to organize and maintain an effective record keeping system ? Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work within established timelines ? Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.   Supervision/Evaluation: Under the supervision and direction of the site or District administrator.   Education and Experience Required: ? High School Diploma or equivalent ? Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the requiredknowledge and abilities ? Experience equivalent to six months working in a healthcare facility coupled with someclerical background is preferred ? Valid California Driver’s License ? Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR/AED, and First Aid and AED Certification) ? Must be currently licensed as a Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse in California.   Working Conditions: ? Regular/occasional contact with students, teachers, parents, staff, Board of Educationmembers, community members and outside agency personnel ? Wear District provided identification or clothing as required ? Work environment-indoors and outdoors ? Possible confrontations ? Moderate to high noise levels ? Temperature extremes ? Potential contact with cleaning agents ? Health office environment; subject to exposure to communicable diseases.   Physical Abilities: ? Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents and the display screen ofvarious office equipment and machines ? Able to conduct verbal conversation ? Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels) ? Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk ? Able to sit for sustained periods of time ? Able to climb slopes, stairs, steps, and ladders ? Able to kneel or squat for extended periods of time ? Able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds, and up to 70 pounds with assistance, occasionally ? Able to push and pull objects weighing up to 80 pounds ? Able to stand on hard flooring for sustained periods of time ? Able to walk on hard flooring for sustained periods of time ? Able to push and /or pull a variety of tools and equipment ? Able to operate office machines and equipment in a safe and effective manner ? Hearing and speaking to exchange information ? Dexterity of hand and fingers to operate equipment, carrying, pushing or lifting supplies ? Visual capability to observe ? Able to move around school environment independently ? Able to sustain strenuous manual labor for 4 hours with legal breaks ? Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal rotation ? Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder abduction and adduction ? Able to exhibit full range of motion for elbow flexion and extension ? Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder extension and flexion ? Able to exhibit full range of motion for back flexion ? Able to exhibit full range of motion for hip flexion and extension ? Able to exhibit full range of motion for knee flexion ? Able to exhibit full range of motion for hand activities including fine manipulation,grasping, flexion of wrist, and gross manipulation ?
