SALARY: Certificated Salary Schedule: $87,000 - $175,044, $3,828 Master’s Stipend (Max 2), $7,656 National Board Certification

WORK DAY: Teacher Contract Day: MON, TUE, THU: 8:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m.; WED: 8:00 a.m - 4:30 p.m.; FRI: 8:00 a.m - 3:30 p.m.
WORK YEAR: 185-day teacher contract year
GENERAL SCOPE OF WORK
Under the direction of the Director of Student Services and site principal, the Education Specialist (Moderate/Severe) provides specialized academic instruction, case management, assessment, and consultation services for students with moderate to severe disabilities.
The Education Specialist collaborates with general education teachers, related service providers, paraeducators, and families to implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), promote inclusive practices, and support student access to academic, communication, adaptive, and functional life skills development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Provide specialized academic instruction for students with moderate to severe disabilities using evidence-based practices.
- Implement instructional strategies to support communication development, adaptive skills, functional academics, and behavior regulation.
- Adapt and modify curriculum and instructional materials to meet the individualized needs of students.
- Promote student participation in general education settings when appropriate through collaboration with general education staff.
- Align individualized instruction with grade-level curriculum and functional life skills development.
- Apply positive behavior supports and structured classroom management strategies.
- Collect and analyze student performance data to guide instructional planning and program adjustments.
- Monitor student progress regularly and adjust instruction to support student growth.
- Serve as the IEP case manager for assigned students.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Schedule and facilitate IEP meetings and coordinate team input.
- Ensure services outlined in student IEPs are implemented appropriately.
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with all timelines and procedural requirements.
- Coordinate follow-up activities related to student services and supports.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state special education laws and district procedures.
- Conduct annual and triennial academic assessments using appropriate educational evaluation tools.
- Interpret assessment results to support program planning and instructional decisions.
- Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and report progress as required.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive practices and student participation in general education classrooms.
- Work closely with related service providers including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, behavior specialists, and school psychologists.
- Provide consultation and resources to staff and parents regarding student learning, behavior, and support strategies.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and student support teams.
- Provide direction, training, and supervision to paraeducators assigned to the classroom.
- Coordinate paraeducator responsibilities to support effective implementation of instructional and behavioral programs.
- Support consistent implementation of student support strategies across staff.
- Foster a positive, structured, and supportive learning environment for students.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Instructional strategies and curriculum for students with moderate to severe disabilities
- Communication development and adaptive skill instruction
- Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
- Universal Design for Learning and inclusive instructional practices
- Federal and state special education laws including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
- Educational assessment tools and diagnostic instruments
Ability to:
- Design and implement individualized instructional programs
- Facilitate collaborative IEP team meetings
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and staff
- Supervise and guide paraeducators effectively
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
- Maintain accurate documentation and meet compliance requirements
- Adapt instruction to meet diverse student learning needs
EDUCATION/LICENSES/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Valid California Education Specialist Credential – Moderate/Severe or equivalent
- Minimum of two years of experience teaching students with moderate to severe disabilities preferred
- Experience developing and implementing IEPs preferred
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens; ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels; ability to speak clearly; and sufficient hand and finger dexterity to operate standard office and classroom equipment.
