Position Summary
The Mat Facility Driver / Laborer will be responsible for safely and efficiently transporting staff from one location to another. This includes picking employees up from their home each morning before work and dropping them back off at the end of the workday. They will need to ensure that all transportation duties are carried out in a safe and timely manner and ensure that addresses and other transportation details are correct before undertaking any pick-up or drop-off duties.
This position will also perform laboring duties and work in the production facility to assemble and assist in the production of finished products, such as lumber mats, mine cribbing, wood stakes, etc.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Transport company employees, products, and materials to and from specified locations in a safe and timely manner.
- Accurately follow maps and directions for safe and time efficient routes, adjusting travel routes to avoid traffic congestion, road construction, or unsafe situations.
- Promptly inform the company of any tickets or citations received while operating the company vehicle.
- Report any accidents or vehicle issues encountered while driving to management.
- Maintain/inspect vehicle equipment to ensure safety. Ensure assigned vehicle is cleaned out of all trash and non-essential materials at the end of each day.
- Visually inspect vehicle and tires daily (pre-trip inspections) for damage or maintenance problems (tire wear, dents, etc.) to ensure there are no problems before driving. Refuel vehicle and check oil and other fluids as needed to ensure it is always ready for use. Keep windows and mirrors clean for visibility while driving.
- Alert maintenance of problems with vehicle or of any vehicle-related equipment in need of repair.
- Perform physical laboring duties in a production facility to assemble and assist in the production of finished products, such as lumber mats, mine cribbing, wood stakes, etc.
- Operate and maintain mat drills.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of the facilities and equipment to ensure a safe and smooth operation.
- Identify and assist in the troubleshooting of processes and equipment issues.
- Assist with the loading and offloading of logs, wood products, and materials, including lifting products by hand or with the use of equipment.
- Maintain good attendance, be on-time, dependable, and conscientious regarding the position and the responsibilities of the driver/laborer. Provide proper notification when absence or tardiness is unavoidable.
- Able to work some weekends, extended hours, holidays, and/or as needed.
- Follow all driving laws, posted speed limits, safety rules, company policies, and wear appropriate PPE.
- Report free time to the Foreman or Manager, ask for additional assignments, and assist co-workers, as needed.
- Operate machinery/vehicles/equipment as qualified and/or as licensed.
- Ensure gates and buildings are secured at the end of each day (if you are the last employee to leave).
- In conjunction with the company management, share ideas to improve efficiency, productivity, quality, cost control and safety for this job and associated responsibilities.
- Seek guidance and direction where needed in the performance of responsibilities and duties.
- Assist and train others on work methods and other work-related skills as needed or requested.
- Assist in snow removal operations or yard duties as needed.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a vehicle and in an outdoor sawmill and mat building production setting, as well as in the company yard and buildings, which includes exposure to routine hazards such as moving machinery, equipment, vehicles, and extreme temperatures (hot/cold), as well as exposure to dust and wood shavings.
The position may require travel to other facilities or sites. Subject to noise, odors, fumes, and substances typically associated with vehicle operations and gasoline/diesel fuel equipment and machinery use. Subject to frequent interruptions and varied workloads and must possess ability to work in a busy environment.
Must be able to remain calm in emergencies to prevent injuries, maintain safety and assist as needed. Position is considered minimally stressful on an occasional basis.
Position Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent certification.
- A Driver's License in good standing.
- Must have a clean driving record with no recent moving violations.
Experience
- Driving experience with a safe driving record.
- Sawmill production and maintenance with working knowledge of sawmill and mat building equipment.
- Experience in manufacturing, production, or assembly facility.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
The position requires the ability to safely drive company vehicles while transporting other employees to and from work. Excellent time management skills required. Proficiency using GPS devices is preferred.
Ability to operate machinery or equipment used in the production of finished products. Ability to multi-task, set priorities, meet deadlines, work collaboratively with others, and assist and/or train others as needed.
Must pay attention to detail. Ability to accomplish goals in a team environment. Must adhere to the company’s safety program, including the proper use and wearing of the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
