Responsibilities
What You Will Do
As a Jail Booking Specialist, you will manage the high-stakes environment of the booking room. Your daily responsibilities will include:
- Inmate Processing: Managing the full intake and release cycle, ensuring all computer and paper records are legally compliant and meticulously maintained.
- Legal Documentation: Reading and interpreting complex legal writs, medical instructions, commitment orders, and summonses.
- Communication & Crisis Management: Utilizing interpersonal skills to provide directions to inmates and the public, mediating disputes, and performing crisis intervention—including recognizing abnormal behavior or suicide risks.
- Safety & Security: Conducting searches for contraband and performing visual and audio surveillance of inmates for extended periods.
- Systems Operation: Operating the CCIC/NCIC computer systems for teletypes and queries, and entering data into specialized criminal justice databases.
- Facility Support: Answering phones, managing property intake, collecting fees, and maintaining an inventory of necessary supplies and forms.
To be successful in this role, you must meet the following requirements:
Minimum Requirements
- Experience: At least one (1) year of experience in basic clerical work.
- Technical Skills: Ability to type at least 35 words per minute and proficiency in basic office software (email, word processing, and spreadsheets).
- Availability: Ability to work a rotating shift schedule, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience working within a criminal justice setting.
- A degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong command of the English language (grammar, spelling, and punctuation).
- The ability to exercise independent judgment and remain professional in an "antagonistic environment" where you may encounter hostile individuals.
- The capacity to learn and interpret Colorado State laws and Constitutional case law pertaining to the jail environment.
- Excellent physical senses to detect conditions such as smoke, odors, or unusual noises within the facility.
