Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Associate Vice President of Student Success and Engagement provides strategic leadership, coordination, and assessment for programs and services that enhance student engagement, health and wellness, development, and retention. The position ensures compliance with institutional, state and federal standards while promoting holistic student success and engagement across all supervised units.
Essential duties include:
  • Serve as a key member of the leadership team for the Division of Student Success and Compliance.
  • Provide vision and oversight for student success, wellness, and engagement programs that align with institutional goals.
  • Oversee implementation of student-centered services in a multi-campus environment.
  • Manage divisional operations, budgets, staffing, and assessment processes.
  • Coordinate compliance with state, federal, and accreditation requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Student Success and Compliance.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all functional areas under Student Success, including Disability Services, Event Services, Retention Services, Student Health Services and Wellness, Student Life, Recreational and E-Sports, Title III LEAPS STEM, Title V LEAD, and Upward Bound.
  2. Develop and implement a unifying vision for student engagement, wellness, and belonging that aligns with institutional strategies, plans, priorities and the Laredo College mission.
  3. Supervise and evaluate directors and project leaders within assigned units, fostering professional growth and accountability.
  4. Oversee planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs in Student Life, Disability Services, Health & Wellness, Retention, and Recreational & Esports.
  5. Administer Title III LEAPS STEM, Title V LEAD, and TRIO Upward Bound projects in alignment with federal guidelines and grant objectives.
  6. Promote holistic student development through co-curricular programs, leadership training, and civic engagement initiatives.
  7. Lead college-wide wellness efforts, including health promotion, mental health awareness, and preventive care initiatives.
  8. Ensure counseling, case management, and campus nursing operations are coordinated with health and wellness services.
  9. Serves as liason to faculty to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  10. Support the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and coordinate student care and referral systems in collaboration with Campus Police and Title IX offices.
  11. Guide retention strategies and early alert initiatives to identify and support students at risk of withdrawal or academic difficulty.
  12. Collaborate with faculty and academic leaders to link student engagement and retention efforts to classroom learning and persistence outcomes.
  13. Engage all units in assessment and continuous improvement, including annual plans, outcomes, and reports within the institutional effectiveness cycle.
  14. Review and approve budgets for all supervised departments, ensuring efficient use of funds and compliance with grant and institutional requirements.
  15. Lead the planning and execution of major college events, including Welcome Week, Family Fun Fest, Fall Fest, student awards ceremonies, and cultural celebrations.
  16. Oversee the use of campus facilities for student and community events in coordination with Event Services.
  17. Strengthen partnerships with external organizations to enhance student wellness, leadership, and service-learning opportunities.
  18. Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, including FERPA, ADA, Title IX, Clery, and federal grant requirements.
  19. Promote data-informed decision-making through the use of dashboards, performance indicators, and student engagement analytics.
  20. Serve as a liaison to internal committees and community partners focused on student success, health, and safety.
  21. Advance a culture of inclusion, belonging, and campus pride through innovative programming and student leadership development.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Student Success and Compliance to support institutional goals and strategic initiatives.

Required:
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in Higher Education Administration, Leadership, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible leadership experience in Higher Education, student services or student affairs, including supervisory experience over multiple departments or functional units.
  • Valid State Driver’s License.
Preferred:
  • Doctorate in Higher Education Administration, Leadership, Counseling, or related discipline. 
  • Preference will be given to candidates with certifications in student affairs or wellness leadership and experience administering federal Title III/Title V programs.
  • Experience overseeing health and wellness services, student engagement initiatives, and federally funded Title III and Title V programs at a community college or public higher education institution.
  • Certification in Mental Health First Aid or Crisis Intervention.
The Associate Vice President of Student Success and Engagement 
Should demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of community college philosophy and student development theory.
Expertise in ADA, FERPA, Title IX, and Clery compliance.
Strong leadership in supervising multiple departments.
Ability to plan, assess, and evaluate programs that enhance student engagement and retention. 
Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
Familiarity with grant administration and compliance reporting, data-driven decision-making.
The ability to foster collaboration across institutional divisions and with community health care providers, community leaders and community partners.
Introductory Review Period:
All hires are subject to a 90 day introductory review period.

Supervision Exercised
Supervises the Director of Disability Services, Director of Event Services, Director of Retention Services, Director of Student Health Services and Wellness, Director of Student Life, Director of Recreational and E-Sports, Project Director of Title III LEAPS STEM, Director of Title V LEAD Grant, and Director of Upward Bound.

Supervision Received
Reports directly to the Vice President of Student Success and Compliance and may receive additional direction from the College President.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work is performed in a standard office environment.    
Work inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.  
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
