JOB DESCRIPTION: Secondary Literacy Interventionist

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Secondary Literacy Interventionist provides targeted, evidence-based instruction to students in grades 6-12 who require specialized support in reading and writing. This role focuses on diagnosing specific literacy deficits and delivering impactful interventions that equip adolescent learners with the skills to access and engage with complex, grade-level texts. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of how foundational literacy skills are developed and remediated in older students, fostering an environment that builds academic confidence and independence.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The interventionist:

  • Designs and delivers targeted, evidence-based literacy interventions for individuals and small groups of students in grades 6-12.
  • Explicitly teaches strategies related to word study, reading fluency, academic vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
  • Scaffolds instruction to help students successfully navigate and extract meaning from complex, cross-curricular texts.
  • Integrates targeted instruction focused on foundational reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
  • Creates a supportive learning environment that actively builds students' confidence and academic self-efficacy.
  • Administers and interprets screening diagnostic literacy assessments to identify specific gaps in foundational skills.
  • Monitors student progress using progress monitoring tools along with formative and summative data.
  • Maintains accurate, up-to-date records of student performance and intervention goals.
  • Collaborates with content-area teachers to align intervention schedules and strategies with Tier I classroom instruction.
  • Serves as a literacy resource for secondary staff, sharing knowledge of adolescent reading development and remediation strategies.
  • Communicates regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, instructional goals, and at-home support strategies.
  • Maintains compliance with any state or district level literacy mandates.
  • Participates in professional growth (such as professional organizations, coursework, workshops, and conferences) and other professional activities (such as school and/or District committees, taskforces, in-depth studies, or councils). *
  • Follows the policies and procedures of the school and the District. *
  • Demonstrates a sense of professional responsibility, such as demonstrating ethical behavior; providing accurate data and reports when needed; meeting deadlines; maintaining confidentiality; caring for the equipment and materials; and dressing appropriately and presenting a good role model. *

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

This role requires specialized expertise in the development of adolescent literacy that extends significantly beyond the scope of early childhood or elementary reading instruction. While a foundational grounding in the science of reading is essential, the successful candidate must demonstrate a proven ability to apply this knowledge specifically to older learners who have experienced prolonged academic struggles. This necessitates a distinct pedagogical skill set tailored to remediating foundational deficits within a secondary context—such as tackling advanced multisyllabic word study, accelerating the acquisition of academic and disciplinary vocabulary, and building reading fluency with complex, dense syntax. We are seeking a practitioner with a demonstrated track record of leveraging diagnostic data to design age-appropriate interventions that not only close severe foundational gaps but actively restore a student's academic self-efficacy, ultimately equipping middle and high schoolers to confidently and independently navigate rigorous, cross-curricular texts.
