Summary

Under general supervision, ensure the availability, stability, and integrity of voice, data, video, and wireless network services. This is achieved by planning, designing, and developing physical infrastructure across the organization. In addition, the Field Systems Engineer will participate in the installation, monitoring, maintenance, support, and optimization of hardware, software, and communication links. This individual will also analyze and resolve hardware and software problems promptly and accurately and provide end-user training.

  • Monitors infrastructure environment, access, security, functionality and utilization; resolve issues; assure optimum performance, system integrity and uptime.
  • Coordinate repair/replacement of defective or deprecated equipment, including phones, building security access controls, security cameras, switches, servers, UPS’s and other hardware.
  • Plan and coordinate design and installation of new equipment, including phones, building security access controls, security cameras, switches, servers, UPS’s and other hardware and software to support present and future needs.
  • Coordinate LCIT or vendor installation of new or replacement cabling infrastructure, including fiber, network cabling, and low voltage.
  • Conduct regular maintenance on equipment and software patching/upgrades to ensure optimal security and performance.
  • Prepare and update technical documentation.
  • Monitors maintenance contracts to ensure coverage/minimization of costs for equipment replaced or purchased.
  • Coordinates/liaises with telecommunications vendors; conducts surveys regarding phone equipment and carriers; resolves billing issues with phone companies.
  • Respond to service requests for field equipment.
  • Provide technical support and training to users relevant to supported equipment/software.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot telephony environment, including County PBX system and Digital Fax Server.
  • Research telecommunications, building security, network products, services, protocols, and standards to stay abreast of industry developments.
  • Comply with all County equipment safety policies, procedures, and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
  • Work on an on-call basis as required.
  • Support other Infrastructure team members in accomplishing team duties as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of County organization, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of network administration and engineering principles, including data communications protocols and topologies, including VoIP, LANs, WANs, and computer components and peripherals.
  • Knowledge of system access, security, and networking infrastructure guidelines and procedures.
  • Knowledge of OSI layers 1-3.
  • Knowledge of data cabling and fiber optics.
  • Knowledge of Building Communications/Electrical Infrastructure design.
  • Knowledge of Building Security equipment, including door access controls and security cameras
  • Knowledge of hardware and software troubleshooting techniques in a networked environment.
  • Knowledge of techniques for the use of network hardware, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other devices.
  • Knowledge of trends in telecommunications, security, networking, and information technology systems.
  • Ability to create a workplace that prioritizes customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently manage resources, time, and finances.
  • Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently.
  • Ability to present a professional work attitude.
  • Skill in analyzing issues, evaluating alternatives, and making logical recommendations based on findings.
  • Skills in researching and planning networking upgrades, building security, VoIP hardware/software, procedures, and techniques.
  • Skill in ensuring the continuity and integrity of networking, communications, and security systems.
  • Skill in installing and terminating data cabling.
  • Skill in installing, maintaining, modifying, and upgrading field infrastructure systems.
  • Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with public officials, outside agencies, County staff, and the public.
  • Skill in effectively communicating verbally and inwriting.

Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's Degree in Computer Science field, and two (2) years experience in low-voltage cabling, infrastructure data cabling/fiber optics, door access controls, VOIP phone systems, or electronic building security systems; OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience AND successful completion of a criminal history and background check; Must have or have the ability to obtain a Wyoming Low Voltage License within two years of hire. Must have a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record.
