JOB DESCRIPTION

Laramie County School District #1 Career Counselor

Purpose Statement

The job of Career Counselor is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for providing students with information on career and/or post high school educational opportunities appropriate to the students abilities, aptitudes and interests; administering and interpreting career assessment tools; planning onsite presentations by college and/or career representatives; and working with parents, teachers, administrators and community personnel to meet the needs of students.


This job reports to the Principal.


Essential Functions

  • Administers and interprets assessments (e.g. PLAN, PSAT, ACT, PAWS, Kuder, etc.) for the purpose of determining students career interests, values, skills, and personality type.
  • Assists students in planning their educational program for the purpose of helping to ensure the success of the student while in school and after graduation.
  • Assists students (e.g. financial aid, college materials, applications, on line registration, scholarships, individual career plans, using job search skills, etc.) for the purpose of supporting activities necessary for gaining admittance and securing financial aid for post graduation academic and/or vocational opportunities.
  • Attends professional development workshops and conferences for the purpose of upgrading knowledge and skills in the areas of career development and mental health issues related to adolescents.
  • Collaborates with a wide variety of internal and external groups (e.g. Career and Technical Education Team, CTE Coordinator, Parent Advisory Council, Business Advisory Council, etc.) for the purpose of implementing programs, gathering information and addressing problems.
  • Conducts student workshops and/or presentations for the purpose of providing student with information regarding occupational programs, career center's services, and/or other post high school opportunities.
  • Conducts classroom presentations and individual interviews at the junior and senior high school level for the purpose of informing students about career services and resources that are available and assists students in the career planning process.
  • Coordinates on-campus site visits by college and university recruiters, employers and military personnel for the purpose of enhancing students access to educational opportunities.
  • Evaluates transcripts for the purpose of scheduling students in the correct classes.
  • Instructs students for the purpose of how to use computer career planning system to take self assessments and explore career options.
  • Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic lists and records (e.g. inventory of college catalogues, applications and web site locations, student career pathways and plans, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials for internal use and distribution as required.
  • Monitors student activities in the career center for the purpose of providing a safe and positive environment.
  • Organizes career center activities and events (e.g. college and career fairs, job shadowing, web page, etc.) for the purpose of informing students and parents about current career information.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and committees (e.g. professional conferences, class visits, community service group meetings, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and enhancing knowledge and skills to better serve students.
  • Prepares a variety of documents, reports and written materials (e.g. individual awards, invitations, event programs, bulletins, reports, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to parents and staff; providing written support; developing recommendations; and/or conveying information.
  • Provides counseling for the purpose of addressing the social, emotional, academic and career planning needs of secondary students.
  • Researches educational and/or career opportunities for the purpose of providing students with the most current information on educational and/or career opportunities.
  • Schedules career and/or vocational assessments of students' interests and abilities for the purpose of evaluating career options.
  • Solicits information and/or materials from colleges and other organizations (e.g. college, trade/technical schools, college videos, etc.) for the purpose of enhancing the career center reference collection and providing additional resource for students and parents.
  • Supervises student workers and career development specialist for the purpose of ensuring that work functions are completed correctly and within specific timeframes.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including utilizing pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; planning and managing projects; analyzing; effective listening; facilitating meetings; guiding others; monitoring activities; problem solving; planning; labor market trends; and counseling techniques.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: college entry requirements; codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; community resources; current and emerging technology; working as a team member and counseling skills.

ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: being attentive to detail; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working with frequent interruptions; adaptability/flexibility; confidentiality; leadership and direction; and using counseling skills.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 30% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.


Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
Education: Masters degree in job-related area.

Certificates: Appropriate Wyoming State Department of Education Certificate and endorsement in school counseling and highly qualified status
