Purpose/Summary:

A Laser Operator performs duties necessary to cut material according to customer specifications using laser table equipment. In addition to preparing orders according to customer specifications, a Laser Table Operator is also responsible for the proper set-up, communication with proceeding shifts and monitoring laser table equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Loads equipment with raw material using the overhead crane and/or forklift in order to prepare the equipment for an accurate cut.
  • Prepares equipment to cut material by downloading the proper program to the computer according to customer specifications.
  • Measures material before/after cutting to ensure compliance with customer specifications.
  • Accurately completes inspection reports after inspecting and measuring the material.
  • Performs preventive maintenance as needed.
  • Completes assigned duties in accordance with safety policies and practices. This regards to individual safety, the safety of other employees, and the safe use of equipment in the workplace.
  • Wears approved personal protective equipment such as safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by a supervisor, lead person or management.

Working Conditions:

Working conditions may consist of loud noise, vibratory tools, repetitive motions, airborne particles such as metal dust and chips and exposure to chemicals, fumes and bright light. Physical requirements include continual standing, walking, lifting, twisting with periodic bending, climbing, stooping, crawling and crouching.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills:

  • A minimum of one (1) year previous laser table work experience is preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand measuring tools and equipment such as a tape measure, calipers and micrometer.
  • Ability to safely operate overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • Ability to perform math including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions as well as convert fractions to decimals or vice versa.
  • Ability to understand and read blueprints
  • Ability to recognize and interpret colors according to the company’s classification system.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds, as well as lift and move heavier objects with the assistance of cranes, forklifts, or another employee.
  • Knowledge of general shop procedures and rules including safety precautions.
  • Ability and willingness to cooperate with co-workers and work as part of a production team.

For laser operators, their job will be in an inside environment that will consist of a noisy, dusty atmosphere. They will need to be able to lift, kneel, pull, stand, bend, grasp, reach and twist while standing on a regular basis.

Some of the risk factors for their job will include repetitive motions, awkward postures, reaching above the shoulder and moving heavy objects.

Their main hazard but not limited to will be their hands and body, after that some other hazards will include head, foot, eyes, fall and noise hazards. Along with the hand and body hazards, some hazards that come from the job will be: improper bending/twisting, tripping over the product/material, falling off the table or handling the steel. Also includes handling and using equipment that could malfunction or be mishandled.

Some preventive measures will be having the proper PPE (safety glasses, shoes, hearing protection, etc.) on while making sure they are using the right technique when moving/lifting objects. Maintaining focus and being aware of what is going around the person at all times is another preventive measure especially when steel plates are being moved in the bay or when equipment is being used frequently around you.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.50 - $25.00 per hour
