Director of Finance & Firm Operations

Lank, Johnson & Tull, CPAs
Seaford, DE Full Time
POSTED ON 10/6/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 2/3/2027

Lank, Johnson & Tull is seeking an experienced financial and operational leader to work directly with the firm's partners and help guide the business side of our growing CPA firm.

This is not a traditional accounting manager or administrative position. We are looking for someone who can step back, understand how the firm is performing, identify opportunities to operate more effectively, and help turn financial and operational information into better business decisions.

The right person will serve as a trusted advisor to the partners, bringing financial discipline, operational insight, and a willingness to challenge the status quo when there is a better way forward.

What You'll Lead

Financial Strategy & Performance

  • Lead the firm's internal accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash-flow planning
  • Develop meaningful financial reporting and analysis for the partners
  • Monitor profitability, margins, expenses, working capital, and key performance indicators
  • Analyze the financial impact of staffing, compensation, pricing, technology, and other significant decisions
  • Oversee billing, WIP, accounts receivable, collections, and cash management
  • Strengthen financial controls, policies, and reporting processes
  • Identify opportunities to improve profitability and deploy resources more effectively

Firm Operations & Strategy

  • Evaluate how the firm operates and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, capacity, and accountability
  • Lead process improvement initiatives across departments
  • Evaluate technology, automation, systems, and vendor relationships
  • Help leadership translate strategic decisions into execution
  • Develop scalable processes as the firm grows
  • Lead operational planning for tax season and other peak periods
  • Identify unnecessary complexity, expense, or administrative burden and recommend solutions

People & Organizational Effectiveness

  • Provide leadership to the firm's administrative and support functions
  • Partner with leadership on staffing levels, organizational structure, and workforce planning
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, performance management, and compensation planning
  • Oversee payroll, benefits, retirement plans, PTO, and related internal HR administration
  • Establish clear ownership, accountability, and reporting throughout the firm's administrative functions
  • Help ensure the firm is using its people at the highest and best level

Partner & Executive Support

  • Serve as a financial and operational thought partner to the firm's partners
  • Provide analysis and recommendations rather than simply reporting results
  • Help evaluate investments, new initiatives, and growth opportunities
  • Bring visibility to emerging financial or operational issues before they become larger problems
  • Challenge existing practices constructively when the data supports a better approach
  • Help leadership balance profitability, efficiency, employee experience, client service, and long-term growth

Who We're Looking For

We're interested in accomplished professionals who have operated at a Controller, Director of Finance, Director of Operations, Firm Administrator, VP of Finance, CFO, or comparable leadership level.

The strongest candidates will bring substantial experience in financial management and business operations, including budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, financial analysis, internal controls, process improvement, and leadership.

Experience in a CPA firm or other professional-services environment is valuable, but we are also interested in experienced financial leaders from other industries who have demonstrated the ability to understand a business, improve how it operates, and advise ownership or executive leadership.

A CPA, MBA, CGMA, or similar credential is welcomed but not required.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this position means the partners have better information, stronger processes, greater accountability, and more confidence in the financial and operational decisions they make.

We want this person to understand where the firm is making money, where we're losing time or resources, what deserves investment, what needs to change, and what opportunities we have to build a stronger business.

This is an opportunity for an experienced professional who doesn't simply want to manage a function, but wants to have a meaningful role in how a firm is run and where it goes next.
