Essential Functions
- Read and interpret construction blueprints, specifications, and grade stakes to establish accurate pipe layout and alignment.
- Be familiar with different pipe materials, such as concrete, plastic, ductile iron and their specific installation requirements.
- Excavate, grade, and prepare trenches to proper depth, width, slope, and compaction requirements.
- Position, align, and install pipe sections and fittings with precision, ensuring proper elevation and grade.
- Connect pipes using approved techniques such as gaskets, seals, glue, clamps, or welding, depending on material type.
- Install related structures, including manholes, catch basins, valves, fire hydrants and service lines.
- Operate and maintain tools and equipment such as pipe lasers, trench boxes, shoring systems, and compaction equipment.
- Assist heavy equipment operators by spotting, signaling, and ensuring safe pipe handling and trench operations.
- Perform testing to verify pipe integrity and compliance with project specifications.
- Backfill and compact pipe, restoring work areas to meet safety and project standards.
- Follow all OSHA, union, and company safety regulations, including trench safety and confined space procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Support the crew and perform additional tasks as needed to ensure project success.
- Previous experience in underground utility construction or pipelaying preferred.
- Ability to read and work from construction plans and specifications.
- Knowledge of trench safety, shoring methods, soil conditions, and proper grading techniques.
- Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools and equipment.
- Strong work ethic with the ability to perform physically demanding tasks in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.
- Reliable, safety-minded, and able to work effectively as part of a union construction crew.
- Problem solving skills – must be able to identify issues and address such as obstructions or utility conflicts.
- Commitment to quality, such as inspections, identifying damage or other potential issues.
