What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Landscape Designer position at Landscape Theory Studio?
Landscape Theory Studio is looking for a Lead Landscape Designer to join our small, collaborative team of goal oriented professionals who love creating, building, and continually improving the homes and outdoor spaces we create for our clients.
This is a hands on design role for someone who enjoys both creative design and client relationships. You will work directly with our Sales Manager, Project Manager, and Operations Manager to take projects from the initial consultation through design development and into installation.
The Role
Initially, this position will be 20–30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with a flexible schedule based on workload and sales pipeline. We anticipate transitioning this position to full time within approximately four months as the company and workload continue to grow.
As our Lead Designer, you will:
- Participate in client consultations alongside our Sales Manager.
- Lead design presentations and guide clients through the design process.
- Develop complete residential landscape designs, including planting, hardscape, drainage, retention, lighting, and other site improvements.
- Conduct site visits to photograph, measure, and assess existing conditions.
- Develop material lists and coordinate design information with the installation team.
- Develop CAD drawings and construction documents using AutoCAD.
- Create compelling colored and 3D renderings to communicate design concepts.
- Collaborate with the Project Manager and Operations Manager throughout the build process.
- Participate in weekly team meetings and occasional installation site visits.
- Maintain strong, professional relationships with clients throughout the design and build process.
- Apply knowledge of Austin and Central Texas plants, soils, materials, and site conditions to create practical, beautiful landscapes.
- Navigate or contribute to the permitting process when required.
- What We're Looking For
Required:
- 3–5 years of professional landscape design experience.
- Residential landscape design experience.
- Strong knowledge of Austin and Central Texas plants and growing conditions.
- Working knowledge of Central Texas soils and site conditions.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD.
- Experience with rendering software and 3D visualization.
- Strong communication and client relationship skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and move work forward independently.
- A collaborative, positive, goal oriented approach.
Preferred:
- Design/build experience.
- Experience with LMN or similar landscape business or project management software.
- Degree or formal education in landscape architecture, landscape design, horticulture, construction, or a related field.
- Knowledge of residential landscape permitting and construction processes.
- A professional landscape architecture license is not required.
Who You'll Work With
Our designers work closely with our Sales Manager, Project Manager, and Operations Manager. We believe the best landscapes happen when the person designing the project stays connected to the people selling, managing, and building it.
We value kindness, knowledge, creativity, accountability, and goal oriented teamwork. We want people who are excited to contribute ideas, solve problems, learn, and help make the entire company better.
