Position Overview
The Grading/Blade Operator (Foreman Level) is responsible for leading grading operations in the field while operating a motor grader or blade to achieve precise finished surfaces in line with project specifications. This role combines expert equipment operation with leadership responsibilities, ensuring crews complete work safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. The operator will serve as the grading lead on site, directing labor and coordinating with other equipment and divisions to meet production goals.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Operation
- Safely operate a motor grader (blade) for fine grading, road building, pad construction, and other excavation-related tasks.
- Utilize GPS, lasers, and traditional grade-checking tools to achieve required elevations and tolerances.
- Perform daily inspections, routine maintenance, and minor repairs on assigned equipment.
Leadership & Foreman Duties
- Lead grading operations and direct supporting crew members, ensuring productivity and teamwork.
- Coordinate with superintendents, survey crews, and project managers to achieve grade and production requirements.
- Provide feedback, coaching, and mentoring to crew members, modeling safe work practices and company values.
- Complete daily production reports, communicate material and equipment needs, and maintain accurate jobsite documentation.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and enforce company safety standards, including proper PPE use and hazard recognition.
- Conduct jobsite safety tailgate meetings when assigned grading responsibilities overlap with crew leadership.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable OSHA, UDOT, and company safety requirements.
Qualifications
Required:
- 5 years of experience operating a motor grader/blade in heavy civil construction.
- Demonstrated ability to achieve finish-grade tolerances for roadways, pads, and drainage.
- Leadership experience in a foreman or lead role, with proven ability to manage a crew.
- Strong understanding of construction plans, specifications, and grade stakes.
- Familiarity with GPS grade control systems and ability to troubleshoot as needed.
- Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
Preferred:
- Previous experience on municipal, DOT, or large-scale excavation projects.
- Competent Person training and other safety certifications.
- Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills.
