Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Survey Instrument Operator to join our growing surveying team. In this role, you will be responsible for operating a variety of advanced surveying instruments and equipment to collect precise spatial data for construction, land development, and civil engineering projects. Your expertise in land surveying techniques, data collection, and equipment operation will directly contribute to the successful completion of topographic surveys, construction staking, ALTA surveys, Title Surveys, waterfront development, Final As-builts, and other critical geospatial tasks. Responsibilities
- Operate survey instruments such as LEICA TS16 total stations, LEICA GS18 GPS/GNSS systems and digital levels to gather accurate field data.
- Conduct construction layout surveys and construction staking to ensure project specifications are met precisely on-site.
- Perform land surveying tasks including topographic surveys, boundary surveys with legal descriptions, and ALTA surveys for commercial developments.
- Utilize CAD software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D and GIS tools like QGIS to process and analyze collected data.
- Assist with utility locating to aid topographic surveys. perform invert measurements for storm drainage, sanitary sewer as well as other utilities related to water main design.
- Collect survey data using hand tools, tapes, level rods, and field surveying techniques while maintaining safety standards.
- Prepare detailed schematics, drawings, and reports that accurately reflect surveyed conditions for project teams and clients (as-needed).
- Support survey project planning by interpreting schematics, topographic maps, and construction plans to ensure proper data collection procedures.
- Maintain calibration and proper functioning of all surveying equipment; troubleshoot technical issues promptly.
- Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and construction crews to ensure survey data aligns with project timelines and specifications.
Qualifications
- Proven experience operating survey equipment such as total stations, GPS/GNSS systems (including LEICA or Trimble GNSS), levels, and related field tools.
- A good understanding of land surveying principles including trigonometry, geometry, algebra, legal descriptions, and CAD drafting techniques.
- Proficiency in CAD software is a plus for (AutoCAD, Civil 3D), GIS applications (ArcGIS) Software or similar programs.
- Knowledge of construction layout surveys, construction staking procedures, ALTA surveys, topographic surveys, and schematic interpretation.
- Familiarity with survey data analysis skills for accurate reporting; experience with surveying standards such as Schematics is a plus.
- Ability to perform utility locating accurately using specialized tools; experience with GPS surveying is highly desirable.
- Physical ability to perform heavy lifting and work outdoors in varying weather conditions; comfort with fieldwork requiring hand tools and safety gear.
- Good math skills including trigonometry and algebra; strong attention to detail for precise measurements and data collection.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams; capable of interpreting technical drawings and schematics clearly.
- Construction or civil engineering experience is preferred but not mandatory; a proactive attitude towards learning new technologies is essential.
