Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Outdoor Power Equipment Technician to join our team in Newport News, in an air-conditioned shop.
In this role, you will be responsible for the diagnostic, maintenance, and repair of small engines, and outdoor power equipment. You will play an integral part in helping customers with repairs, providing expert recommendations and guidance on proper maintenance, ensuring proper equipment operation, offering solutions to equipment issues, and contribute to the proper functioning of the service department’s operations.

Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide variety of outdoor power equipment, including lawnmowers, generators, snow blowers, chainsaws, and small handheld equipment.
- Troubleshoot issues with small engines, electrical systems, fuel systems, and mechanical components.
- Perform routine maintenance and safety checks to ensure equipment is operating efficiently and safely.
- Conduct warranty diagnostics and repairs to exceed industry standards and manufacture requirements.
Customer Service and Support:
- Assist customers in the service department by evaluating their equipment needs, providing accurate diagnoses, and recommending appropriate repairs or solutions.
- Write detailed customer contracts and invoices for repair services, ensuring clear communication of services rendered, costs, and warranty information.
- Demonstrate proper use and maintenance of equipment to customers as needed.
- Foster strong customer relationships by offering reliable, knowledgeable service and addressing any concerns in a timely and professional manner.
Inventory and Equipment Management:
- Maintain accurate inventory of parts, tools, and equipment necessary for repairs.
- Ensure the proper storage, organization, and maintenance of tools and equipment in the service department.

Service Department Operations:
- Ensure the efficient operation of the service department, including organizing the repair queue, managing incoming work orders, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
- Perform quality control checks to ensure all repairs meet the company’s standards before equipment is returned to customers.
- Follow safety procedures and protocols to protect both yourself and customers during the repair process.
Collaboration and Team Support:
- Work alongside other technicians, customer service representatives, and store management to ensure smooth operations within the service department.
- Provide input on ways to improve service efficiency, customer satisfaction, and overall department performance.
- Participate in training sessions and share knowledge with colleagues to maintain high standards of technical expertise.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday (Saturdays during peak season), 8 hour shift 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Qualifications and Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least 1-2 years of experience in the repair and maintenance of small engines and outdoor power equipment is highly desirable.
- Previous experience working in a fast-paced, customer-facing role is a plus.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong technical knowledge of small engines, power equipment, and repair methods.
- Ability to perform troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs on a wide range of equipment, including mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate technical issues and solutions.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy service environment.
- Comfortable using a variety of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and power tools in the repair process.
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. and work in various weather conditions as needed.
Certifications (Preferred):
- Certification or formal training in small engine repair, outdoor power equipment mechanics, or related fields is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license is preferred.
- Forklift operation certification.
