Job Summary
The Lamar University Police Department (LUPD) is seeking a dependable and professional Police Dispatcher to join our team in a part-time capacity. Dispatchers are responsible for the general operation of the Communications Center, including answering emergency and non-emergency calls, coordinating responses, and monitoring campus safety systems. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors
Essential Job Functions
What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities

Operate department two-way radio equipment and maintain radio logs

Answer telephone calls and provide accurate information to callers

Determine when calls require emergency action and relay critical information to patrol units

Coordinate police, fire, ambulance, and other emergency responses

Monitor alarm systems for unauthorized entry to university buildings

Operate computer terminals for record-keeping and dispatching

Maintain compliance with university standards, policies, and procedures

Provide excellent customer service and promote positive public relations
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum and Desired Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required

Experience or training sufficient to perform dispatch duties

Ability to read and interpret departmental policies, regulations, and reports

Knowledge of computers and two-way radio operation

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

Ability to remain calm under pressure and exercise sound judgment

Willingness to work nights, weekends, and emergencies as needed
- Requires sitting for extended periods and responding to calls in real-time
- Night, weekend, and emergency shift work required
Must successfully complete 40-hour TLETS – Basic Telecommunications and TCIC/NCIC procedure training within one year of appointment, as determined by the Texas Department of Public Safety
Preferred Qualifications
Previous dispatch or law enforcement communications experience
Familiarity with university or campus environments
