JOB DESCRIPTION:


Primary Purpose: Assist in performing general maintenance and repair of building structures and their mechanical, electrical and sanitary systems throughout the District. Assist with the maintenance of grounds.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Major Responsibilities and Duties
Maintenance and Repair
  • Assist in repairing and performing maintenance of district facilities including:
    • Painting
    • Repairing woodwork
    • Preparing conduit, armored and nonmetallic sheathed cable for making connections
    • Repairing and replacing electric equipment, switches, fixtures and motors
    • Repairing and replacing appliances
    • Repairing and replacing plumbing fixtures and drainage systems
    • Replacing broken glass
  • Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment and grounds; perform maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Detect and report the need for major repairs on building structures and their systems, including lockers, furniture and equipment.
  • Complete repairs as requested on work orders or by supervisor.
  • Assist with mowing and detailing of district grounds.
  • Assist with relocation of furnishings, such as desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, etc.
  • Assist with installing, assembling and repairing all school furniture as needed.
  • Hang pictures, mirrors, blackboards, bulletin boards, projection screens, towel dispensers, soap dispensers and other items as required.
  • Assist with installing door and window assemblies and hardware, including window glass and screens.
  • Assist with installing ceiling and flooring materials.
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling projects as needed.
Driving
  • Operate a district vehicle to transport furniture and equipment.
Safety
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques in lifting, climbing and performing other job duties.
  • Correct any unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain tools and equipment and perform preventative maintenance as required.
  • Attendance at work is an essential function.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.

EXPERIENCE:


QUALIFICATIONS:


Minimum Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred
  • Trade license as required by state and local authorities
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
  • Eligible for coverage under the District’s vehicle insurance program
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Knowledge of basic construction
  • Knowledge of building codes and state and local ordinances preferred
  • Knowledge of routine maintenance and repair procedures
  • Knowledge of a variety of building trades
  • Knowledge of asbestos use and locations of asbestos containing materials in buildings
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics or other work plans
  • Ability to read and understand instructions for maintenance and safety procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work in confined areas and withstand heights
  • Ability to use a computer efficiently

OTHER INFORMATION:


Equipment Used: Computer, power tools, hand tools, dolly, wire cutter, tubing bender, volt meter, welder, concrete mixer, mower, weed trimmer, blower, edger and garden tools. Working Conditions: Mental/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over), pushing, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, standing, walking, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending, climbing, operation of motor vehicle, specific visual requirements (depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors), specific hearing requirements. Outside and inside; exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, gases, solvents, grease, oils asbestos, silica, etc.; exposure to mechanical, electrical and chemical hazards; works around moving objects or vehicles, works around machinery with moving parts, works on ladders or scaffolding, unusual fatigue factors, protracted or irregular hours of work.
