What are the responsibilities and job description for the Aide, Special Education Additional Support position at Lamar CISD?
Primary Purpose: To assist and support the classroom teacher in providing effective instruction and a positive teaching/learning environment.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Cooperatively perform tasks under the supervision of the teacher.
- Provide assistance to the teacher in preparing and implementing Positive Behavior Supports and the Texas Behavior Support Initiative.
- Assist in teaching and implementing school rules and routines at the campus.
- Provide academic/vocational instruction to individual students and with groups as directed by the teacher on student Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals/objectives and state assessment tasks.
- Escort students to elective and outclasses assigned by the teacher.
- Collect data on student IEP goals/objectives as directed by the teacher.
- Performs assigned supervision of students during lunch periods, play periods, and on field trips.
- Perform assigned non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack time, toileting, clothing routines and self-help skills as applicable.
- Assist medically fragile or physically disabled students for the purpose of maintaining students’ personal hygiene.
- Participate in the transfer of non and semi-ambulatory students.
- Appropriately manage students physically, verbally, and non-verbally who may be out of emotional/behavioral control.
- Teach and practice social skills in alignment with age/grade/program expectations.
- Assist with tube feeding, escorting students and monitoring for all meals.
- Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.
- Attend meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. trainings, IEP meetings, emergency procedures, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Confer with teachers on a regular basis for the purpose of accountability and assisting in evaluating special education student progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
- Complete SHARS billing and/or Time Study requirements on services provided to eligible students.
- Attendance at work is an essential function.
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Monitor and supervise students
Minimum Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Title 1 Funded Campus: 48 semester hours of college coursework from a regionally accredited college or university OR meets NCLB requirements for Highly Qualified Paraprofessionals
- Non-Title 1 Funded Campus: 30 semester hours of college coursework from a regionally accredited college or university OR three years of full-time work-related experience with special needs students in an instructional or child care facility
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Constructive and cooperative attitude toward the duties of the aide, the school, the staff and the students (ages 3-21) who have severe or multiple handicaps
- Ability to read, write and implement instructions designated by teachers/supervisors in order to meet IEP objectives
- Ability to follow directives and to perform tasks necessary to ensure the safety of students at all times
- Ability to communicate positively with students, both verbally and non-verbally
- Ability to change diapers, feed and care for children (ages 3-21) who may be severely handicapped

Equipment Used: Computer, copy machine and other standard office equipment, audiovisual equipment, lifting equipment, special learning devices and other specialized/adaptive equipment used by students. Working Conditions: Mental/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Communicating (verbal and written), understanding verbal instructions, reasoning skills, reading, instructing, emotional control. Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds), occasional heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) and positioning students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through appropriate restraint techniques, assisting non-ambulatory students, lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment, pushing, pulling, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, walking, standing, repeated bending, specific visual requirements (activity sufficient for reading/writing), specific hearing requirements (activity sufficient to monitor children's safety), traveling (daily, to many settings on and off campus). Inside and outside (classroom; community and recreational sites, including swimming; exposure to sun, heat, cold and inclement weather), microwaves, works with hands in water, exposure to noise, exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases), works with frequent interruptions, ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
