Responsibilities
- Safely operate commercial vehicles such as school buses, transit buses, and wheelchair-accessible vans according to established routes and schedules
- Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, providing wheelchair assistance and ensuring passenger safety at all times
- Follow traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations diligently to maintain a secure environment for passengers and staff
- Respond quickly to traffic changes or emergencies using emergency response procedures for transportation, including emergency stop procedures and accident protocols
- Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to identify maintenance needs or safety issues; report any concerns promptly
- Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, passengers, and team members using effective communication skills in English or multilingual settings
- Manage passenger behavior through behavior management techniques and enforce student discipline policies when applicable
- Assist with heavy lifting tasks related to vehicle equipment or passenger needs while adhering to safety standards
- Complete accurate logs, incident reports, and shift documentation to ensure compliance with company policies and legal requirements
Qualifications
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for bus driving, paratransit, or heavy vehicle operation
- Proven experience in bus driving, school bus operation, transit bus operation, or van driving roles
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, state and local commercial driving laws, and transportation safety regulations
- Strong understanding of emergency response procedures for transportation incidents and CPR certification is preferred
- Ability to perform quick responses to traffic changes while maintaining focus on passenger safety
- Experience working with children or seniors is highly desirable; familiarity with child care or behavior management techniques is a plus
- Excellent communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are an advantage for serving diverse communities
- Capable of heavy lifting when necessary; physically fit to handle the demands of the role
- Knowledge of school policies related to student discipline and behavior management is beneficial
- Demonstrated commitment to customer service excellence with a positive attitude toward passenger interactions
